Apple Adds Single Sign-On, YouTube Searches on Apple TV![]() Apple announced several updates to its Apple TV service, including a new feature called "single sign-on" that lets users log in with their credentials just once to access apps from programmers. With single sign-on, when users sign into one network app on Apple TV they're automatically logged in to all of the other apps that require authentication through their pay-TV subscriptions. During the single sign-on process, customers can also see all of the authenticated apps that their pay-TV provider supports in order to find and download the video content they want faster. Single sign-on will be available on both Apple TV and iOS this fall. Pay TV providers, such as Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), have been working for years to make the authentication process easier for their subscribers, but in addition to single sign-on, Apple also has Siri. Apple also announced expanded Siri capabilities on its tvOS, including searches across more apps,YouTube searches, searches by topics and "live tune-in" for faster switching between live streaming channels. The YouTube Inc. searches by Siri will be available later this month.
"The future of TV is apps, and Siri on Apple TV has changed the way we interact with our television and these expanded features will continue to deliver viewers what they want to watch even faster," said Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of internet software and services. After launching the fourth generation of Apple TV last fall, Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) said there were more than 6,000 apps and over 1,300 video channels available. Apple also announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference that Sling TV , which includes live TV and VOD offerings, and Fox Sports Go were added to its app roster. — Mike Robuck, Editor, Telco Transformation |
