Video Bigger Than Messenger
Of course video is popular because we use it on smart phones iPads etc. You would think that the messenger app would be up there with video somewhat because most of us send and receive messages.

@clrmoney yes, as this days everyone uses cellphones for everything... I keep reading laptop/desktop sales decline each month... but messanger apps and real time video apps is here to stay

This is just an old medium being replaced by a newer one.
Instead of people watching broadcast television, they watch on Facebook. That's going to give the company considerable clout over the next few years.

@dcawrey The reason Zuckerberg is taking so much time with this, is he's not sure whether video is really going to add that much to his coffers. How does he plan to really differentiate? Users already use their phones to watch video.

I think Zuckerberg's intuition is probably right on, for a reason that many in our industry are unlikely to think of: lots of people really prefer to be passive receivers rather than active transmitters, and prefer to be "social" only in the sense of consuming the same thing all together -- not of making it together. The market for passive video is intrinsically much larger. It's just that the industry is still in the early stages where people are still coming in, and early adopters are more active than the population that will be moving in after them.

srufolo1 - I think facebook is struggling with that a little. It's (arguably) been a bit slower to get into the premium video game because its not really sure how it can create a video experience that best fits Facebook engagement. Right away, I think traditional 60-min dramas are out, there's no real opportunity for FB there. What it wants is short, bite-sized pieces of video content that spur social interaction, sharing, reccomendations and commentary. So something like the highlights of a game, or near-real-time video clips of goals or touchdowns that users can get on their cellphones and respond to, share or tag friends etc.

batye - I think messenger is still a very important part of FBs strategy, but I think in terms of monetization, it's easier to sell video ads, and you can charge a lot more for them -- specially with the targetting that FB is working towards. And high quality video content -- even if its in short formats -- will (arguably) drive larger viewers/users in more predictable patterns. So again, value for advertisers.

@Adi - I agree, content that is geared towards specific users is a lot more cost-effective for advertisers than any ad that any and everybody will see. I still have no idea why Facebook decided I'd be a good target for an ad about a 6 child stroller, but as a mother with 3 under the age 5, I'm sure it's a lot more targeted to me, then say a 60-year-old, single male with no kids. Even if it did freak me out. And video ads always grab attention better than a single picture ad. So all around, the idea is valuable, even if it's one those of us in the general public would rather ignore.

@srufolo1 - Realistically thouh, even video capabilites and messenger combine, because you can make video calls with Facebook Messenger. My husband and I used it last year when I was having an ultrasound he couldn't come to because of work. We even tried using the video calling our phones offered but it wouldn't connect right. Only Facebook messenger seemed to work for our locations.

User generated video...
I keep seeing the rise of "user generated video" -- but what I'm actually seeing is mostly semi-professional video, not "user generated" video. The occasional viral video from "Chewbacca mom" sometimes pops up, but I think most of the views are still from people trying to produce videos for income, not just the occassional random video share.
