@Ariella  interesting point, I could not agree more... but also like to add in some places phone is more like status symbol...

I know that cell phones are fairly common in Africa. I wasn't sure about smartphones, though, which are, as you say, fairly expensive. I looked up the figures and found that based on the Pew's findings, that in Ghana just over a third of the adult population has a smartphone, though the numbers are evne lower in other parts.  To give the numbers more meaningful context, they are compared to phone ownership in the US, where 64% owned a smartphone as of December 2014. For cell phones in general, though, the gap is much smaller. The figures also show disparities by gender, as more men than women have cell phones in Africa.

 

Some don't own a phone but do use one that they have access to. It would be the main form of connection as landlines register at close to 0%. So definitely mobile would be the way to go in this area.
