Google Fiber coming to Europe?
When is Google Fiber going to launch in Europe, I wonder? There was speculation this could happen at Light Reading's Gigabit Europe event in Munich late last year (http://www.lightreading.com/gigabit/gigabit-cities/will-google-start-a-euro-gigabit-gold-rush/a/d-id/718513) and it could have a pretty dramatic impact in some markets given the low broadband speeds that customers still have to make do with.

Re: Google Fiber coming to Europe?
I could use gigabit at my house that's for sure...with kids watching videos and playing video games my voice call quality goes way down resulting in me having to put my call on mute and yell, "Hey You Kids! I'm trying to talk on the phone here!"
Re: Google Fiber coming to Europe?
Interesting, Liz. I'm a home-gigabit skeptic myself. Latency is an issue at our house, but bandwidth? Not so much.
I see gigabit as more of a business-to-business play at this point.

Re: Google Fiber coming to Europe?
I think most consumers would be happy getting >50Mbps speeds, and wouldn't really know what to do with that much more.
Plus, if the data caps are really put in place... Gigabit speeds would exceed the proposed data caps well before the month of service was up!
Re: Google Fiber coming to Europe?
I guess we'll know that Google Fiber is serious about Europe when it starts to gauge communities' interest like it did here. The strategy of getting local goverment buy in and community support (in largely affluent areas) greased the wheels.
Does anyone have a 1-Gig service in their home?
Re: Google Fiber coming to Europe?
I agree Mitch. The gig demos I've seen at shows are really cool, but rarely do I need to download the entire Encyclopædia Britannica in 20 seconds.

Re: Google Fiber Coming To Europe?
Mitch, my observations of the gigabit development is that you are correct in that the "drivers" in the market are going to be B2B and local governments (i.e., cities), that provide these connections to the consumer. The growth appears to have been very uneven, which is why this report is potentially good news.
I believe we consumers want the access but individually don't need the full gigabit capabilities, after the novelty wears off.
I also agree that the IoT and growth in streaming will increase the collective markets.

Re: Google Fiber Coming To Europe?
@DHagar interesting to know as same trend started happening in Canada in Toronto :)

Re: Google Fiber Coming To Europe?
@bayte, interesting. At what stage is/was Canada? Who were the players involved (i.e., public/private)? And how did it evolve?
Has the development and growth been complete and is it sustainable, or is it experiencing the fragmentation I referred to that we are encountering in the US?
How do you see Canada evolving with IoT?

Re: Google Fiber Coming To Europe?
@DHagar it just in the begining stages but two big player Bell and CBC involve...
plus Rogers jumping on board... but in Canada you never know until it actialy happens...

@DHagar Yes, I will when I know more :)
Re: Google Fiber Coming To Europe?
@Mitch / @Mike / @DHagar :
I am completely inline with you folks. I certainly wouldn't deny that gigabit is surely picking the trend but I clearly see that at present it is more into commercial world. I would have to say it still in evolving stage when it comes to average household consumer usage. I am not convinced enough that I will be in need of all gogabit capabilities yet.

Re: Google Fiber Coming To Europe?
ms.akkineni, I am with you on the personal consumer value. Those "added features" aren't a necessity for most consumers. I believe that they may, however, be attracted to a public/private commercial hub that would offer those "connected" features.

Arguing against the new broadband definition...
Also, the FCC's latest definition of broadband (25Mbps up/ 3 down) hasn't been all that popular with some providers... so neither the supply nor the demand is really there yet for Gigabit internet service. It may be the dawn, but the sun is barely showing at this point.
Gigabit Era
This is a great value for consumer rate of things. It will bring numbers to the table and will also bring the production rate higher because of the projects that are forming with the consumers. This will be great for the companys that will want to step up the software/technology sytems.
