Exciting!
As an AT&T customer and certified mobile fanatic I find this information to be super exciting. Obviously it is not right around the corner, but the idea of life in 5G before 2020 goes to show how fast technology - especially in the mobile sector - is changing.
My only trepidation would be the cost of 5G from upgraded infrastructure to monthly subscriptions. Hopefully early adapters will not have to pay an arm and a leg for the new service.

Re: Exciting!
afwriter, I share your enthusiasm for these services. Let's hope the model is as attractive with the pricing - maybe they can provide tiered pricing that will make accessing affordable, with "add-on" capabilities.
But AT&T really seems to be taking the right steps with their platform, their designs, their strategic investments, etc. I predict they will be a leader with 5G and the new platforms.
They are not yet available in my area - I am waiting. So enjoy!

Re: Exciting!
I am super excited also! 4G is so slow. Why has it taken so long for telco to increase the speed to 5G? 5G will offer several benefits including connecting your smartphone to your laptop to get broadband access, more memory for photos, videos, and recordings. 5G will also help advance smart cities, IoT, driverless cars and more.
Samsung hopes to launch a trial 5G network in time for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Huawei is working to implement a version for the 2018 World Cup in Moscow. The South Korea government spent $1.5 billion on upgrades for 5G.

Re: Exciting!
freehe, great examples!
It is my understanding, from several CIO's, that it will truly be "disruptive" technology, making other options appear obsolute.
Yes, technology is truly serving the customer now!

Re: Exciting!
afwriter, you're right, 5G has amazing possibilities! One of my favorite possibilities is that for greater battery life. Ideally, with more efficient communication, not as much battery would be needed. I recently read that the Facebook app alone drains battery by as much as 20% more than other similar apps. And unfortunately, a lot my battery I am sure goes to that app. More than this, the possibility to use D2D more effectively would be revolutionary for most of us.
You make a great point though, the price could be problematic. Though with previous role outs of 3G/4G/LTE the pricing eventually became affordable for most people. While most of us might initially be priced out of using it, through specials to increase the roll out, the price might eventually become something we all adjust to.
Do you think consumers would be willing to carry a slightly higher bill for the tradeoff of 5G capabilities?

@elizabethv
I would hope that we wouldn't have to carry a higher bill, but I think that is inevitable. I believe that consumers would be OK with a 10 per line rate hike; anything more than that and I think they would continue to be content with 4G.

Re: Exciting!
@AFWRITER I would think it depends on the person's needs and preferences. My carrier offers me faster speeds for a higher rate, but I find that what I have meets my needs, so there's not real value for me in paying more. But someone who uploads a lot may find it is worth it to pay more.

AT&T 5G
I think this is a great idea that they are giving more gigabytes like the 5 gigabytes they said they were providing. You and increase or improve the speed of data used with more gigabtytes like the internet downloads etc.

Re: AT&T 5G
Very interesting. Did AT&T indicate how soon it expects to see results? Does the company intend to publish the results?

Isn't every mobile carrier "testing" 5G?
All the carriers are testing 5G... so I'm not so "excited" because I know 5G isn't even a standard yet... and it'll be quite some time before anyone is really using 5G tech.
And to freehe who says 4G is too slow?!? What world are you living in? My 4G wireless connection is faster than my Uverse broadband connection most of the time! (30+ Mbps vs 18Mbps) Granted, I could probably pay AT&T to boost my Uverse speeds above 50Mbps, but that would be at a significantly increased price....
If only there were no data caps on my 4G... I'd tether it and use it all the time in my home... and I guess that's why T-Mo CEO is so mad at the people who have hacked ways to actually do just that (without exceeded a data cap).

Re: Isn't every mobile carrier "testing" 5G?
I agee. I see a lot of carriers testing the 5G concept. I think some carriers may be moving too fast with this new developing technology. I also believe that 4G works perfectly fine and the speed of the connection is still very impressive to me.
However, it would be interesting to see how this 5G develops and at what speed the connection will carry. I think moving forward with new advances in technology is important, just as long as it's done right.

@dlr5288 problems this days new generation of youth market wants latest and greatest... almost the same way as Gaming/Video card industry develops in 1999/2000... same game rules apply to 5G :) how I see it... as files getting bigger due to 4K :)

This is great tha 5G is really stepping up to the plate with the newest technology with the changes they have made they can be up to standards with the systems they copareated with.
