data centers?
Any word on their data center strategy. Windstream got out late last year, at about the same time that VZ reportedly was considering exiting. It's sort of the other half of virtualization discussion - where are all these instances actually going to reside?

Re: data centers?
Announcing something like this ( "CenturyLink Sees 100% Virtual IP Net by 2018.") is like the kiss of death.  Research has shown typically that announcing goals like this means you are less likely to realize them.  I love the Ted Talk on this topic: https://www.ted.com/talks/derek_sivers_keep_your_goals_to_yourself?language=en

Do goal announcements for organizations/companies (instead of individuals) actually follow the same kind of outcomes? I would assume not, since there are several announcements that companies make that investors would hold leadership accountable for if they weren't met.

Not following the herd?
Not every telco/CSP needs a datacenter strategy, but the ones that are committed to virtualized datacenters have a longer term outlook -- and better odds of diverisfying their revenue streams, as long as they stay committed.

Datacenter operations are notably difficult for margins. Amazon and other big cloud infrastructure players aren't really known for making a ton of money from selling datacenter services in a crowed and commoditized industry like datacenters. But if a company's datacenter operations can really innovate and find a niche to fill in the market, it's not like the industry is going away anytime soon.... and there's a certain amount of lock-in that can be created. It's not easy, but it can be done.

The Cloud
Everything is moving to the Cloud and it makes me feel uneasy. I thought it was interesting when asked about the new things that they're working on, one was making sure the Cloud was reliable and has enough storage.

I can only hope that in the future companies who endorse and use the Cloud have mad it a ton safer and more reliable to use. I myself don't like using it too much because I never know if my information will always be kept safe.

I think it's great that they want to learn about the Cloud more and really enhance it to make it better and safer to use. I only hope that they are able to do it.

Re: data centers?
@mhhf1ve - I guess we will have to wait and see how it all plays out to know for sure.  I just feel like statements like this can be very arbitrary.  I think if the statement included the factors considered when choosing this percentage as a goal would help explain, but at the outset, it just looks like a number pulled from the sky.

But in this case, as far as virtualization goes, I don't think there are any ramifications if they don't meet this level - certainly not from any shareholders/investors.

Re: The Cloud
Data protection concerns certainly abound, but I don't think many people are worried about the cloud having enough storage these days (at least, in general -- that may certainly be the case with certain providers/datacenters).  With Moore's Law showing no lapse for the forseeable future, storage is going to continue to get smaller and more affordable.

Re: data centers?
@jbtombes: If Moore's Law stays true long enough, maybe we can have those instances reside on storage drives small enough to evaporate into a literal cloud!  ;)
