Re: Saudi' Moving Into a New Era
afwriter, great points.  As a developing region it would make sense to diversify; particularly now with the deflation in the price of oil.

As I understand it, Israel also has built some strong technology capabilities and is advancing their position in the marketplace.

Re: Saudi Telecom on OpenStack
jbtombes, well exactly - they are small.  That's why I was wondering what their vision is.  Also, if they are the predominate player in that regional market, that makes sense.  The only disrupter will be an international player that provides a complete platform and better choices.

They are building an effective design, though, and are smart to be using OpenStack.

It's not huge, but something in the win column for OpenStack. It was an earlier leader and the luster seemed to be wearing off at some point.

Re: Saudi Telecom on OpenStack
Modest win. According to Iain's article, Saudi Arabia has 35k businesses. That would be about as many as a state like Idaho. With less than 100 large enterprises - whatever that means precisely - currently taking the IaaS offer. But you gotta start somewhere, i suppose.

Saudi' Moving Into a New Era
It is no secret that the entire world is trying to move away from the use of oil which has made this region rick in money and assets.  It makes sense that they would use some of that money to diversify into an area that has unlimited growth potenial.

I am wondering how much more news we will see coming out of that region in the next few years when it comes to both software and hardware.

Saudi Telecom on OpenStack
Mike, that is interesting.  I would believe that more and more telecoms will move that direction and see the benefits.

What markets does Saudi hold and are they a leading platform for multiple telecom services or are they primarily using it for their own network to deliver better telecom services?

I am wondering who, beyond Huawei, are the leading international telecoms?  Do you see segmented markets forming or, as a result of VNF and Open Stack, larger international platforms?
