5G FTW
White box is great and all, and virtualization is a must, but I can't get enough of the 5G news.  I am super excited about all of the possibilities that 5G will bring.

Re: White Box networking gets no love
mhhf1ve, I think you have it right.  The publicity does impact us.  I think the gentleman from AT&T has it right - and this reflects a truly effective design, not just a rush to the latest "hype".

Where these results are consistent, maybe the general public thinks we have moved beyond white box networking?

5G gets more attention and it's also the least well defined so far. There isn't a standard set yet. But the promise of 5G looks much better because there aren't any announced downsides either.

Okay, I meant that the white box manufacturers aren't Cisco or a well-known brand. Though I suppose these white boxes could be made by Foxconn or some other well-known contract manufacturers.

Re: White Box networking gets no love
Sure, people are much more excited about 5G, but the question asked about service providers. White box networking is very bland for the rest of us.

<They're money makers for some unknown manufacturing firms...> @mhhf1ve well someone must know who they are, so long as they're not in hiding somewhere on the dark web.

Users are most excited about 5G so they are less interested to hear about the other technologies.

I agree, but it also gives AT&T the freedom to play one vendor off of the other each quarter to get the best prices.

White Box networking gets no love
It's not a revenue generator as much as a cost saver -- so there's a cap on how much benefit it has -- whereas the other choices are virtually unbounded. That's not to say white boxes won't be ubiquitous - just that they're not money makers for telcos. They're money makers for some unknown manufacturing firms...
