Re: 5G FTW
@dir5288, you are right about 5G being more exciting - and it should be as it will create whole new levels of service opportunities.   The White Box Networking is more of a utility - but enables and supports new platforms.

@elizabethv interesting observation and I would say it related to the bottom line at the end of any project... as it always look good on paper/drawing board but life - real life testing/usage/field testing always bring back reality....

@jamesyoung55  I would say you are right as I do see changes plus shift in thinking/aproach... but to know for a fact it does take year or more....

@DHagar I would say yes I could not agree more but sometimes, things change overnight as directions change... until we see it at the end completed...

Re: White Box networking gets no love
@mhhf1ve 3G is most definitely better than no bars at all! It's all about perspective.

For those that don't have a decent perspective on the possibilities other technologies might bring, what sounds "bigger and better" would likely be far more enticing than anything they don't understand. I have no idea about car engines, so something like a 12-cylinder engine sounds like it would be amazing. But I have some idea that there are other components to that engine, and just because you increase power in one area, doesn't necessarily boost the overall quality of the engine.

Is there a way we might be able to inform the public about new advantages in technology, without boring or overwhelming them?

Re: 5G FTW
I agree!

I think white box networking is great and obviously it has come a long way and perhaps may even become more and more advanced, but I'm more interested in 5G and the new technology advances in reguards to that.

I think people, like myself, are just so eager for the next best thing that technology such as white box networking falls by the wayside.

Re: White Box networking gets no love
The concept of white box implies moving away from those hardened "Telecom" platforms that have been built to supply five 9's of reliability.  This is the model that four 9's of telecom entineers still hold fast in their minds.

A shift from building up these expensive and proprietary bullet proof hardware solutions to a parallel computing model where reliability is based on fault tolerant software and hardware systems - now that's a big shift that shakes the very core of experience for telecom engineering.

Much easier to simply dismiss this concept - the thought that white box suppliers could ever meet the reliability standards we have - not possible.  Therefore if I am in the industry not only is the concept dismissed it is actively disliked in many circles -at least in my opinion.

Still there are those visionaries that have called for the end of five 9's - not to say the end of availability just an end to the traditional paradigm.  Isn't that another way of calling for an end to traditional hardware - to be replaced with white box hardware perhaps.  Why not.

Just because these surveys don't acknowledge this shift in thinking doesn't mean it isn't there.  I feel this type of change must come from the top down where the numbers are small and perhaps the participation in these surveys might be minimal.

The revenue shift is away from costly hardware, maintenance, software liscenses to something that will creat value for the service providers - their unique service delivery systems.  It really doesn't matter much who makes the hardware - it will likely be more competitive if the vendor locks are removed.  In the sense that white box concepts provide the carrot for SP's to move to a new architectural model they make a lot of money for the industry IMO.

Haha! But 3G is better than "no bars" at all... and I remember when 128kbps wireless was considered fast.

Re: White Box networking gets no love
@elizabethv, no I agree with your thinking.  My thinking is that because the public, and those who don't truly understand the value, doesn't really understand the contribution white box networking can add to the entire virtualization capability, it is easier to treat it as an "application", with limits based on their understanding of use - rather than design capabilities.  Therefore, the publicity attracts them to focus on the perceived value of 5G - where it is popular and denotes new value.

In my mind, they are all affected by the design of how we design and build these capabilities - which is what the gentleman from AT&T has the right perspective on the priorities.

Re: White Box networking gets no love
DHagar, I would be more inclined to believe the general public doesn't fully understand the capacities of white box networking. And it is very possible many don't want to. It could be an almost "scary"concept for some to have that much control over their in-house networking options. Whereas, the concept of 5G just sounds like a bigger, better 4G. And who doesn't like their 4G? I personally get a little dismayed when my phone says "3G" in the top. I wonder where I could have possibly traveled to, to deserve such a punishment.

Do you disagree, do you believe the general public has a fair understanding of white box networing? What is your reasoning?

(Just curious. :-) )
