Re: Ah, Smart Cities
@AF You've got a great point. We'll be told there's a failover plan and not to worry but that doesn't actually stop the mind from racing right into the future...

Valid Point
There has been a lot of talk about the technological advances of ISIS, and fears of ISIS trying to hack various aspects of our society. I think this would be even more validated if smart cities started spreading across the country. Imagine the chaos if we all became dependent on a smart city to guide us to work and then suddenly it was hacked and no longer worked. I feel like it's bad enough that people don't learn how to read maps anymore because they are so reliant on GPS. I worry what would happen if suddenly GPS was no longer an option.

5G speeds...
> "expected 5G to deliver speeds 10 to 100 times faster than today's average 4G connections.."

I certainly hope that the data caps increase at the same kind of rate, otherwise we'll be getting into overage usage fees after a few hours of use. Yay for 4K video?

I think I'll be more excited if I'm around to see 6G wireless....

Re: Ah, Smart Cities
I like the idea of "smart cities" -- but I'm skeptical of the security updates that would be needed to really make it work safely. The FBI just issued a warning about "car hacking" that wasn't exactly useful:

http://www.ic3.gov/media/2016/160317.aspx
  • "Where necessary, always use a trusted USB or SD card storage device when downloading and installing software to a vehicle."

If that's the kind of advice to avoid security concerns that I can expect into the foreseeable future, I'm not going to be too keen on voting for a "smart city" upgrade to my neighborhood.

Re: Ah, Smart Cities
@Faryl this is completely off topic, but I deal with that by stocking up on solar powered chargers from phone chargers to battery chargers, to an actual solar powered generator.  I promise I am not a crazy prepper...but I am prepared.  No Zombie appocalypse will keep me from my Bluray collection LOL!

Re: Ah, Smart Cities
@afwriter Good point. It's bad enough when phone networks get overwhelmed during emergencies & natural disasters. And power outtages already make me realize how many devices I've come to rely on that rely on electricity!

Re: Ah, Smart Cities
Just thinking about this stuff gives me goosebumps.  I am currently setting up an IoT in my home, which is both frustrating and rewarding.  While I am super excited about smart cities, my only consern is the Atlantis effect.  What happens when we put to much faith in these systems and then they stop working?

Ah, Smart Cities
I hope the 'smart cities' catch on; what a wonderfully easy world it sounds like it would be...I love the idea of smart lights, smart meters, and on and on...
