Re: Cable Gears Up for Next Phase SDN
"I'm both a Verizon and Comcast costumer and their partnership is almost nonexistent."

Interesting data point. I was a customer of both in the past, but I haven't seen any further offers from either on any kind of service that might bring me back to both at the same time. I would have thought that VZW and Comcast could pull off some innovative services that would be beneficial to customers of both... but.. maybe they haven't worked out the revenue sharing deals.

AT&T has U-verse and mobile deals... but maybe those deals aren't attracting customers and pulling marketshare towards AT&T enough for Comcast&VZW to mimic them.

I would like to see an alternative to Google Fi.. that used VZW and Comcast WiFi. But maybe that's just me.

Nope. AT&T is a transforming telco... MSO? CSP? I dunno what acronyms or labels they're handing out these days to giant communications companies, but the telco/cableco names are being retired.

Re: Cable Gears Up for Next Phase SDN
Yes I haven't either.

I'm both a Verizon and Comcast costumer and their partnership is almost nonexistent. It would be great to actually see these two come together and do something great for their clients. I think these two paired together are capable of doing great things. Maybe they should get the ball rolling though...

Virtualization
"Just because something can be virtualized doesn't mean it should be."

I suppose that's a fair thought. I would wonder about the demographic of the panelists. I think most people in the younger generations would prefer to almost everything virtualized if possible. Whereas I know a lot of people in older generations would likely not want things to be virtualized. Virtualization almost inherantly lends itself to more options though. On the part of a business, it almost makes sense to allow customers more options. With more options you have the ability to make more customers happy. And let's be honest, where cable companies are concerned, more often than not, your options are fairly limited.

I still think it's going to be difficult for cable companies to survive long term keeping up with the status quo. Do you think they'll be able to figure out how to survive?

Above-ground DSL.  Wow.

Next you'll tell me they still use ISDN.  ;)

Re: Cable Gears Up for Next Phase SDN
I think part of what probably hinders U-verse from being more widely used/recognized is that its availabilty is so limited, due to AT&T's own physical cable limitations.

I'm actually a subscriber of its "broadband" services (because I resent not having a choice in cable providers here, so am stubbornly refusing to give my money to Cox!) and it's still using above-ground DSL lines (though they've recently been doing some work to upgrade those locally).

But even though I have U-verse for internet, they don't have the capability to support its cable content services where I live. (Which just motivates my "cord cutting").

Re: Cable Gears Up for Next Phase SDN
Wouldn't it be interesting if, in lieu of furthering their partnership, Comcast simply went out and bought a small cellular provider?

(T-Mobile was going to be bought by AT&T before the feds kyboshed that deal... perhaps they'd still be on the market for the right suitor?)

@faryl: Indeed, although Uverse isn't as well-known or oft-spoken of as its competitors.

More importantly, though, don't forget their acquisition of DirecTV.

Re: Cable Gears Up for Next Phase SDN
Is AT&T considered a cable provider with respect to its Uverse product?  (Similar to Verizon's Fios as well, I guess).
