Orange's Livebox Headset
I'm curious to see what it is like for the orange headset so I  would be very excited to see how it works.

How does this strategy fit in with the rise of OTT services?
Major improvement in CPE that give customers more bandwidth and storage is always welcome. But how will customers be educated that this new gateway is coming? Most customers probably aren't up-to-date on the cutting edge of what the little box tied to the wall does.

I could potentially even see other providers teaming up with OTT services to confuse users about what they can get even without fancy new equipment.

Re: How does this strategy fit in with the rise of OTT services?
I'm not sure I agree it's especially confusing for customers. Most consumers who go in for triple-play (or even quad-play) offerings have been sold on the promise of high-definition TV and are now going out and buying UHD TVs. Operators have been competing for years on the "speed" of their connectivity offerings, so that's pretty well understood too. As you say, though, the question is whether this kind of innovation really addresses the OTT challenge, rather than just the challenge from other telcos. Orange seems to be doing a pretty good job of competing against other telcos in the French market. Whether it's addressing the threat from Internet companies is doubtful.

Re: How does this strategy fit in with the rise of OTT services?
I think you're right, this announcement addresses their telco competition, but it's not an answer for any OTT challenges. But that leaves open an opportunity for other telcos to try to catch up with their own OTT offering. Although, historically, telcos haven't been too adept at developing OTT services of their own -- which is why I think they might try to partner with OTT players.

Re: How does this strategy fit in with the rise of OTT services?
@imorris, I agree--it doesn't seem that confusing for customers...I think most consumers today are pretty 'Smart' (SmartTvs, Smartphones, Smart Homes...) and tech savvy.  Every time we're over there, it seems that there is a desire for something like this from Orange, so I think the French consumer is ready for this and will be happy to have it.

Other Markets
"That and other components of the device could find their way into products and services launched in other markets" - does this mean Orange would license out its technology for other service/hardware providers to use in their technology? (It would be nice to see some of this hit the US market!)

Re: orange headset
For the avoidance of any confusion here, there is no headset being launched that I'm aware of. Luc Besson was simply wearing a virtual reality headset to give conference attendees his  virtual-reality impressions of the inside of the Livebox. It was just a bit of a show, really. The product actually being launched is just the Livebox, which is basically a home gateway -- so for connecting up broadband, TV and telephony services and providing a lot of the functionality around those services.

Re: orange headset
Home gateways just aren't as trendy as a VR demo these days! Can't remember the last time I saw a home gateway that was visually memorable.... maybe there was one that had umpteen antennas sticking out of it, but that was only memorable for being freakishly ugly and a bit scary-looking. Mostly, you want a home gateway to blend into any kind of home furnishings.. and look like a simple box (or maybe an Amazon Echo-like cylinder?).
