Re: Rebranding... or De-branding?
That's exactly what I was thinking yesterday when I read the story that they were removing the Chrome app launcher from most platforms. Sounds like, "Goodbye Chrome!".

Re: Name Change
I wonder how much the re-naming/branding has to do with the transition to their umbrella business being "Alphabet" now.

Name Change
Honestly I think this was a very smart idea. I think associating the name Google with a project, whether it was new or old, is a great move. Everyone knows the name Google. They know it's trustworthy and reliable. So whoever hears this will know Google has something to do with it and I think that will bring in more customers.

Re: Google Cast
@batye, great example.  I believe they invest a considerable part of their budget to continued R&D and they invest in both the products, learning, etc.  Smart move!

Re: Google Cast
Very true regarding the lead times Google and others work on.  The previous firm I worked for had MSFT as one of their top clients and back in the year 2005 I went to visit their "Center for Information Work."  I had to sign confidentiality agreements and non-disclosures.  At the time, they showed us what would turn out to be MSFT Surface, although it wasn't called that yet.  This was a good 7 years before the product was available at retail.

Re: Google dogfoording
This is kind of unrelated, but a while back I heard a former Google employee mention the company's use of "dogfooding."

Re: Google Cast
I have heard this very same thing, Google is always working and thinking ahead. Which is really obvious given their massive success in the tech world. They seem to be commanding just about every type of technology that exists. It is not surpring at all that they are expanding Chromecast. Actually, the technology seems a little exciting and I'll likely check it out. Being in the forefront of people choosing to "cut the cord" and leave their cable behind.

Do you think the name change will make the product more appealing to the public?

Rebranding... or De-branding?
I think the thing a lot of news outlets are missing is that "Chrome" is disappearing from more and more Google product lines. Android is going to absorb Chrome OS, and now Chromecast is dropping the Chrome name... so it looks like Google is quietly retiring Chrome OS... and I wouldn't be surprised if Google renames its browser someday, too.
