Wisdom of the crowd... not so good at predictions?
> "The general consensus on the panel was two to three years..."

For smart cities?!?

That seems highly optimistic given that "smart cities" generally have to go through local governments for budgeting and approvals, etc, etc....

But perhaps it depends on how you define "smart city"? If it's just putting up a few traffic signals with cameras....

Re: Another use for smart cities...
I suppose the audiophiles have created a market for "high end" turntables.. but there's no analogy for tape players. Still, I'm not entirely sure why that is? Tapes are analog. Record players are analog. What's the difference?

I guess rewinding tapes is a pain.. and they do sometimes unravel. LPs will last a good long time if you care for them.. and you can instantly jump to the song you want (without "fast forwarding" and waiting).

I'm curious why LPs have made a comeback, but cassette tapes haven't?? Mix tapes were awesome, and far more portable than LPs... and arguably, they have the same "rich" sound.

@batye, thanks.  I believe that when people "use" technology in ways that solve their problems, it has greater value than just selling the technology itself.  It becomes a true enabler and makes the theories more real.  That is where the value will come in.

@JohnBarnes, I fully agree with the idea that it is a long-term view and that the advancements take place when they are applied to real problems.

What you are proposing certainly "solves problems" in giving order to parking, space utilization, land use, etc.  It appears to me that as cities adopt a vision of better organizing the array of services and improving the effectiveness of the service delivery, they will see the value of "systems" to accomplish that.
