@vnewman Seems especially appropriate since the San Diego Zoo was initially created to take care of all the animals left behind after the World's Fair 100 years ago. Back then, people only could see exotic animals at the fair (or maybe in books) - now we have access to see the world through technology.

@JohnBarnes I get your point...at the same time, it's not like many inner city kids are going to have an opportunity to see gorillas in their natural habitats or wander through a rainforest.
While it's a sorry replacement for active field trips, I think VR is more engaging than just reading textbooks or even a diorama at a museum.

@JohnBarnes One of the other uses was to help build empathy for our environment by immersing people into what it's like to be other creatures. The example they gave was having a person experience what it's like to be corral on the Great Barrier Reef and experience what it's like to be affected by all of the things killing off the corral there (or something along those lines).
So it's not ALL just about dystopian isolation ;-)

I'm not sure that for most people crossing over from reading a boring school assignment about the rain forest to playing a somewhat less boring video game set in a rain forest actually gets them and the rain forest any closer to each other. I think what it does do is teach the occasional rare kid who might want to go somewhere and see something new that everything is just a screen anyway. Separation fuels imagination, and the taste of a thing in simulation dulls the appetite for the real.

The real potential for VR is, I think, shared experience at a distance.
I do think the fact of being completely blind to one's immediate environment is a serious detriment.
