Re: Niche for sure...
The real potential for VR is, I think, shared experience at a distance.

I do think the fact of being completely blind to one's immediate environment is a serious detriment.

Re: Prediction
I'm not sure that for most people crossing over from reading a boring school assignment about the rain forest to playing a somewhat less boring video game set in a rain forest actually gets them and the rain forest any closer to each other.  I think what it does do is teach the occasional rare kid who might want to go somewhere and see something new that everything is just a screen anyway. Separation fuels imagination, and the taste of a thing in simulation dulls the appetite for the real.

Re: Prediction
@JohnBarnes One of the other uses was to help build empathy for our environment by immersing people into what it's like to be other creatures. The example they gave was having a person experience what it's like to be corral on the Great Barrier Reef and experience what it's like to be affected by all of the things killing off the corral there (or something along those lines). So it's not ALL just about dystopian isolation ;-)

Re: Prediction
@JohnBarnes I get your point...at the same time, it's not like many inner city kids are going to have an opportunity to see gorillas in their natural habitats or wander through a rainforest. While it's a sorry replacement for active field trips, I think VR is more engaging than just reading textbooks or even a diorama at a museum.

Re: Prediction
@vnewman Seems especially appropriate since the San Diego Zoo was initially created to take care of all the animals left behind after the World's Fair 100 years ago. Back then, people only could see exotic animals at the fair (or maybe in books) - now we have access to see the world through technology.

Niche for sure...
VR headsets are going to be niche for quite some time... How many people are into high quality simulator video games? Sure, there are some, but it's not that mainstream.

So VR might be good for even more video games, but is it going to be as popular as casual gaming? I doubt it. Unless VR headsets sell for less than $20 and don't give *anyone* vertigo...

I think VR might do better than Second Life.... but I didn't realize SL was still around.

Re: Prediction
@faryl - Now, THIS is impressive.  What if the zoo of the future did not keep real animals enclosed in cages and instead allowed for a similar experience through VR! Then the animals could go back to living in the wild. How revolutionary!

Re: Prediction
Having seen far too much educational software and far too many educational software consultants in a life in both industries, I would say that most of the time software is used to create the illusion that the student is interacting with the real so that interacting with the real can be cut out of the curriculum and money saved. People already spend much of their "nature" time looking at scenery through windshields and hotel windows, or following guides around paved paths before having a snack. VR is a way to reduce actual contact while making bogus contact cheaper.

Re: Prediction
The San Diego Zoo had a seminar on ways technology can be used to connect with nature/animals. Google did a great presentation on the way the Google Maps camera technology can be used to provide VR experiences such as virtual field trips for students. (I think they used an example of a rainforest) It actually looked really cool; though we sadly did not receive any cardboard samples to experience it first hand.
