Getting the customers the best bang for their network buck is an important service. We need to find ways to make it ubiquitous so they have the same experience whether at home, in the car, or traveling. That is where we need some innovative thinking.

@DHagar - I see cable companies being quite like we are today. In fact, I see all service providers being almost the same. We will all have an infrastructure business that provides the connectivity and some will have a services business that allows them to add new capabilities above the physical layer.

With your vision and the new architecture you are discussing, what role do you see cable companies as playing in five years? The same or different?
Management manages the devices. For example, a device comes online and communicates with the management plane to get its config, understand what its function is, where to send data next, etc.
here's a good one: When mentioning the SDN/NFV "Athena" example you had 3 tiers, management, administration, and data. I missed your role for management. Can you expand on the role for management in your example?

@JoeMo - obvious to me are video encoders, transcoders, NMS and EMS functions. Routers are already being virtualized at a small scale, but I expect it will increase when silicon allows.

It will take a while to deploy D3.1. We have to replace our CMTS with CCAP and D3.0 CPE with D3.1. Some of it will be organic, but when customers take the higher tier it will require a swap to a D3.1 modem.
Besides routing, what services or functions within the HeadEnd or MTC do you see next to be virtualized where the customer might notice? Meaning it won't be as transparent to the customer?

What is your plan for issuing IPv6 Addresses to the end home users and businesses? Are you considering dual stack mode IPv4 & IPv6 issued to the same end user(s). IPv6 routing? etc...
Once you get into the SDN/NFV discussion -- will it ever be possible to phase out cable-specific equipment (the CMTS, most notably) and replace it with off-the-shelf (or close to it) compute systems? Even if possible, would circumstances make it desirable? -- Brian Santo
I would be interested o in how they are deploying virtualization with their new architectural designs?
But if facilities are the most costly, I'd also vote for SDN/NFV too

Jeff Finkelstein is the Executive Director of Network Architecture at Cox Communications in Atlanta, Georgia. He has been part of the engineering and architecture groups at Cox since 2002, and was part of the team responsible for the deployment of DOCSIS technologies, from DOCSIS 1.1 to DOCSIS 3.0. Jeff has made significant contributions to the access network design and deployments at Cox, and has the new role of being responsible for future technology planning of backbone, metro, edge, access, and home networks. He is now part of the CableLabs DOCSIS 3.1 PHY and MAC teams, in addition to being part of the IEEE EPOC specification effort.
Question for Jeff: Can you give us an update on project Athena?
