thank you, good day to all, until next time :)

Platinum

Thanks @Mike and @Jeff. Great show!

Platinum

my pleasure. it was fun.

Steel

Thanks again Jeff and for all who joined today. Lots of info in a short amount of time!

Author

Getting the customers the best bang for their network buck is an important service. We need to find ways to make it ubiquitous so they have the same experience whether at home, in the car, or traveling. That is where we need some innovative thinking.

Steel

Thanks -- good info and great session!

Platinum

@DHagar - I see cable companies being quite like we are today. In fact, I see all service providers being almost the same. We will all have an infrastructure business that provides the connectivity and some will have a services business that allows them to add new capabilities above the physical layer.

Steel

interesting question

Platinum

Looks like we have time for one more before Jeff gets back to work. Jeff, can you pick the final question?

Author

BTW, DAA had the most votes, barely, over 3.1 in the LR poll I posted.

Author

With your vision and the new architecture you are discussing, what role do you see cable companies as playing in five years?  The same or different?

Platinum

Management manages the devices. For example, a device comes online and communicates with the management plane to get its config, understand what its function is, where to send data next, etc.

Steel

here's a good one: When mentioning the SDN/NFV "Athena" example you had 3 tiers, management, administration, and data. I missed your role for management. Can you expand on the role for management in your example?

Author

@GeorgiaCougar - Apologies, but I don't have any idea when we roll things out in a specific market. I'm the vision/strategy guy...

Steel

Leisure reading on 3.1 specs.  Test to follow...

Author

When will you rollou DOCSIS 3.1 in Columbus GA, Macon GA

@JoeMo - obvious to me are video encoders, transcoders, NMS and EMS functions. Routers are already being virtualized at a small scale, but I expect it will increase when silicon allows.

Steel

Jeff, I'll let you pick the next one.

Author

It will take a while to deploy D3.1. We have to replace our CMTS with CCAP and D3.0 CPE with D3.1.  Some of it will be organic, but when customers take the higher tier it will require a swap to a D3.1 modem.

Steel

Besides routing, what services or functions within the HeadEnd or MTC do you see next to be virtualized where the customer might notice? Meaning it won't be as transparent to the customer?

Steel

When mentioning the SDN/NFV "Athena" example you had 3 tiers, management, administration, and data. I missed your role for management. Can you expand on the role for management in your example?

Steel

@inkstainedwretch - I thought I said, ""No software written to date has ever created a single photon."

Steel

I'll keep lobbing them Jeff:

How long do yopu think it will take the cable industry to deploy DOCSIS 3.1 globally?

Author

I would be interested in his view on the mesh networks - does he see that as a new platform replacing the components of the current system or a bridge that connects them?

Platinum

oops, meant not a pre-req... Mea Culpa...

Steel

@Duh! - linear (specifically digital) optics are a pre-req, but definitely the most logical way to go

Steel

So we'll give Jeff a few minutes to check out the questions below. But let's start with this one:

Do you agree with the claim that DAA - specifically, getting rid of linear optics - is a pre-requisite for getting the full potential of DOCSIS 3.1.

Author

If you've got questions, now is the time to send them through!

Author

Great question about IoT!

Platinum

How are COX's choices changing on specific items to Push to the edge / push to the core / half way out?

oh no ... there is another acronym to keep track of... SBN: software-based networking

Platinum

Q for Jeff: Speaking of SDN, where are cable operators with rolling out a network on demand type services to business customers?

Platinum

Do you agree with the claim that DAA - specifically, getting rid of linear optics - is a pre-requisite for getting the full potential of DOCSIS 3.1.

Silver

How long do yopu think it will take the cable industry to deploy DOCSIS 3.1 globally?

Steel

What do you see as the biggest challenges in rolling out DOCSIS 3.1?

Steel

"No software written to date has ever created a photon." Can we just pause for a second and recognize how hilarious that is?

When should cable operators go DOCSIS 3.1 and when FTTH?

Steel

Good answer.  you can't virtualize the physical layer.

Hi jeff, where does cox stand with its DOCSIS 3.1 preparations?

Steel

Good question @brian Nice to see you here on the chat!

Platinum

Hi @GeorgiaCougar! Glad you could join the show.

Platinum

This might be a bit off topic but...

What is your plan for issuing IPv6 Addresses to the end home users and businesses? Are you considering dual stack mode IPv4 & IPv6 issued to the same end user(s). IPv6 routing? etc...

Once you get into the SDN/NFV discussion -- will it ever be possible to phase out cable-specific equipment (the CMTS, most notably) and replace it with off-the-shelf (or close to it) compute systems? Even if possible, would circumstances make it desirable? -- Brian Santo

yes, chat is working

Platinum

I would be interested o in how they are deploying virtualization with their new architectural designs?

Platinum

But if facilities are the most costly, I'd also vote for SDN/NFV too

Platinum

Virtualization (SDN/NFV)

Steel

I'd say OTT Video

Platinum

Go ahead and vote on poll!

Author

A recent LR Poll asked What next gen technology or service should be the cable industry's biggest priority this year?

3.1/gig service

CCAP

DAA

Virtualization (SDN/NFV)

FTTH

TV Everywhere

OTT Video

Cloud DVR

Chat is working properly for me now. Not sure what was causing the issue...

Platinum

hope this helps :)

Platinum

just try to refresh page or logout and login back

Platinum

the first part of my comment was cut off - chat is delayed.

Platinum

I'm not getting a delay @michelle -- maybe your broadband is acting up? Hamsters aren't running fast enough there?

Platinum

Is a little delayed on my end. Anyone else seeing the same?

Platinum

colorado, rain and sunshine!

Question for Jeff: Can you give us an update on project Athena?

Platinum

Looking forward to hearing from Jeff.

Platinum

The countdown has begun!

Platinum

Y'all come back at noon EDT.

Looking forward to it!

(Does this cover the industry as a whole - internationally - or is this US-specific?)

Platinum

Sounds interesting - looking forward to learning how Cox is deploying these new technologies

Platinum

I do hope to see new people telcotransformation.com as we are stronger in numbers and do learn from each other :)

Should be an interesting chat. Just went over the questions with Mike and it will be lively. Hope y'all can make it.

Steel

Interested in how DOCSIS 3.1 competes with "fiber to home/fiber to business" solutions being offered now days.

Looking forward to this show. Always interested in learning where cable is headed.

Platinum
Good morning. looking forward
