Great interview. The key is educating customers about the benefits of the products and services provided, how it will make their personal or business lives easier.
@DHagar, Things are certainly much easier if the community you are trying to serve wants and understands the benefits of good connectivity. I spend quite a bit of time speaking to city councils, chambers of commerce, and service organizations. That investment of time always bears fruit and makes everything easier to accomplish.
@DHagar, Sorry I didn't see your earlier question about funding. All of our construction is measured against a 24 month ROI. If we can't make it profitable within that timeframe, we don't build. In most cases, since we do our own construction and have great equipment vendor relationships, we can make it work. If we had to contract out our construction and didn't have favorable pricing on electronics, we would most certainly struggle to do what we do without government subsidies.
Great topic(s) - will review the recoding as well
thanks Bert
thank you, good day to all
Thank you! Fun, informative show. Looking forward to more.
Thanks Mike and @jfranell! Great show today!
I look forward to hearing the archived audio. Thank you for your insights today @jfranell.
Thanks, everybody! What fun.
Thanks again, @jfranell, great to hear your insight today!
DOCSIS 3.1 is supposedly capable of Gigabit service. However, fiber is more scalable in the long run. I expect that cable modem service will continue to be competitive for years but ultimately, fiber will win.
Looks like we're out of our scheduled time. Joe, if you have time for one more, go for it. Thanks again everybody.
We are working on an IPTV offering. Not sure if we'll launch at this point. There are so many really good OTT products, we may have missed our window of opportunity.
Hmm. can the new DOCSIS boxes compete with fiber? I see Comcast is trying to edge out Google Fiber in a few markets...
I'm catching up - reading Joe's article on security.
Will EOT offer video at some point?
Greetings all. I see I've nearly missed the whole discussion today.
For your reference: Broadband Strategic Planning Project – www.Oregon-broadband.org
There is a good template here that you can use in your area.
Yes, the Cleartech cluster is a good example.
Collaborative economic development barriers - people get focused on turf and control. Working with others is still a challenge for many. Trust is the best medicine to overcome that.
We have DOCSIS 3.0 deployed and it is capable of 200-300 Mb/s service to the end user. I think that the main driver for 3.1 will be OTT 4k video. If we see adoption there, 3.1 will be necessary in the long run.
While Joe is typing, lets overload hime with more questions!
From earlier:
What are the main barriers he sees to collaborative economic development?
Thanks, @jfranell! I agree, education is really important.
Joe, do you see a need for DOCSIS 3.1 modems?
Ransomeware is a tough one. Educating the customer is the best approach. Again, make it harder to attack you then the next guy and you'll probably be okay.
thank you. excellent show
Good question. While we have not yet taken any government funding (a bit of a matter of principal) we are exploring some of the new USF funding for broadband.
There you go Kelsey and jfranell!
Good question Kelsey, Joe can you take that one?
Do you think organizations are doing a better job of creating safeguards in the event of a ransomware attack?
will EOT be making funding changes with the new FCC order released last month? will it help in building out to new areas?
Mike - like these views, where can we read the articles he has written that you are referencing? Will they be on Telco Transformation?
Thanks - this is great!
Do you think organizations are doing a better job of creating safeguards in the event of a ransomware attack?
There are plenty of promises and then...nothing.
Does he believe that small customer-focused carriers can in the long run gain market share over the large carriers?
Hi, vnewman - absolutely! You think we are making progress but no so!
@DHagar - I didn't realize you must be near me. That's my story as well. Hard to believe, isn't it?
In addition to my earlier question about public/private partnership fundindg, does he have a successful model for "sustainable" funding after the infrastructure is established?
Is Google Fiber's rollout visionary, or too exclusive to matter in the long run?
@Mike - it's not available in our City of 200,000+ - a suburb of Los Angeles
It is hard to imagine but it seems most people get very confused about bits and bytes - also not understanding they can't take advantage of the service without the proper equipment.
How many of you have a gigabit service?
Interesting to hear about the marketing challenge of explaining gigabit fiber to consumers.
yes, could not agree more
Get your questions in now for the online chat!
that's so true about people not understanding what a gigabit is!
Is there a successful model as to who pays for the broadband infrastructure?
Hello everyone! Poll answer: No
Sorry i m late!!hope i didn't miss much!lol
What are the main barriers he sees to collaborative economic development?
quick poll: Is your service provider a convener in your community? Yes or No. Examples
Who does he see as the key drivers - public or private partners?
Great analogy re: restaurant service!
The show will be archived and available immediately after we finish the live interview.
Looking forward to today's show!
Very excited to hear Joseph speak on this topic!!
Good morning/afternoon everyone! Remember to turn up your volume on the computers. At the top of the hour an audio player will pop up on your screen. If you don't see it, try to press F5 to refresh your screen. Remember, there's no slides for this it's just a discussion, so be sure to post your questions, comments and thoughts on the message boards and we will join you on the chat after the audio stream.
Really looking forward to this show, seems like the customer-centric model is gaining traction and I look forward to hearing Joseph Franell on best practicies!
