Re: The right spot between one-off and immediately reusable
@John:
Amazing analogy ! I like your mention of meta development as well as how you explained with R / S scenario.

Re: Verizon IoT Marketplace
Yes!
I'm just hoping that it's something worth waiting and being excited for. Any new projects, especially coming from Verizon, get me curious and anxious to see what's to come.
Re: Verizon IoT Marketplace
Me too, though I am not a Verizon customet at present. I am eagerly waiting to see how this is going to evolve.

As a Verizon customer I'm beyond excited! I can't wait to see where Verizon ends up in the future and what new projects they have in store.

In case they are reading this, I welcome our software overlords and think they are quite good-looking and very clever.

Re: The right spot between one-off and immediately reusable
faryl,
Well, another way to look at it is that the course of metadevelopment is producing software that learns in a more and more human way. Already the machine intelligence folk routinely talk of "training an algorithm," by which they mean rewarding it by copying and incorporating it whenever it does something they like, and the analogy to training flatworms or goldfish is pretty clear. The step beyond training, of course, is education (meta-metadevelopment? Or is that just getting too silly?) Instead of just successfully copying the tricks of the human operator, the software learns to think like the human....but better?
I hope they'll be nice when they take over.

It will be interesting to see if any "cottage industries" grow out of it.
("Meta development" - I like it!)

Re: The right spot between one-off and immediately reusable
faryl,
It's also a slowly developing idea in software development (a metadevelopment?): the line between users and programming can be gradually broken down by just recording what successful users do. That was a big part of the evolution of R out of S: R gave S users who didn't "program" per se but used S as a complicated calculator/display/access program a way to make sure they did the same exact steps the same exact way every time.
