Yes I agree open source and standards bodies must collaborate.

Platinum

Thanks, Mike & Robin.

Author

Thanks, Mike - thank you. Rpbon!

Platinum

nice job Robin and Mike!!

Author

Disruptive tecnologies? Well there a great deal of third party applications and services that alter business models in video / VoIP / gaming / business services

Steel

Thanks so much Robin, for providing your email address and being on today's show. Thanks again to all who attended and made this a great radio show!

Author

Everyone - please feel free to email me directly. I am missing some questions - rmersh@broadband-forum.org

Steel

Third party apps are very important - the SPs will not do this on their own. NaaS will be a way of encouraging third party players to do what they are good at and for SPs to do what they are good at - provide a smart platform

Steel

Mike - poll - Systems integration partners

Platinum

Systems integration partners

Steel

Robin, what disruptive technologies have you identified?  How might they actually launch new opportunities for telecoms?

Platinum

Question for Robin: Do you see that as the role for SPs in the future? Taking advantage of SDN, virtualization, Open APIs  to integrate 3rd party apps? Almost like an SI, but on their own network, platforms?

Author

NFV development partners

Author

LightRay - testing is critical and it has to be continuous. The biggest concern is testing for migration - a huge can of worms

Steel

One more poll:

What are operators in most need of right now?

Better standards

Video content partners

Mobile apps development partners

Open source ecosystem partners

NFV development partners

Systems integration partners

Author

Thank all of you, have a nice day!

Steel

Makes sense, thanks!

Platinum

DHagar - 2021 is hard to judge, My crystal call is not that good. However I think that it could see a real boom in new services

Steel

I hope Robin is a fast typer.

From below:

what needs to change to enable organizations to work with each other? open cloud platform developments/test beds? an opening up of all specs code to the open source community?

Author

very quick 35 mins! this is a topic to come back to and get an update - see how things are working out.

Author

Great stuff Robin and Mike. I learned a lot.

Author

Thanks for the show today!

Platinum

thakn you robin!!

Steel

Robin, thanks - great info!

Platinum

Robin,  What is your vision for Broadband in 2021 and telecoms?

Platinum

Alison, DHagar, I definitely agree with you,.... focus to integration

Steel

Alison, I think that is a great focus!

Platinum

Drop by for a visit :)

Platinum

Good question @Dhagar!

Author

He's right: Networking experience is critical.

Silver

@Konsultor - that's a great question - I work for a firm that does a lot of IP and patent licensing and litigation.  The two are inherently at odds with each other.

Platinum

It's actually the approach we're taking at the New IP Agency. We're not creating standards. Rather we focus on interoperability in the virtualization space.

Silver
oh yes most definitely
Steel

Robin, Do you believe Broadband Forum would further grow the market if you are able to advance common standards for the technology and across industry as a bridge for the telecoms?

Platinum

@Alison - that sounds like a viable solution - I just wonder why it hasn't happened yet.  No appears to be even trying.

Platinum

Robin:  What is the current attitude of standards bodies toward patented technologies?  What if the patent holder provides open source code as an implementation example?  Is an easy licensing agreement acceptable?

Steel

what needs to change to enable organizations to work with each other? open cloud platform developments/test beds? an opening up of all specs code to the open source community?

Author

Everybody's merging!

Platinum

yes - seems to be exploding in SDN and NFV, and there is alot of overlap. Operators are confused

Would one approach be to enable multiple standards to work together, rather than trying to force different standards to go away since they all have advocates?

Silver

Robin, Should the industry align around standards already developing for SDN and NFV deployments with data centers and other technology?

Platinum

Poll - yes - there's no directive.

Platinum

Yes, I believe there are segmented standards - possibly tied to different markets.

Platinum

Yes, there are far too many standards bodies.

Platinum

Poll response: Hmm not necessarily...more consensus and collaboration is needed.

Author

Another question for Robin - do you see cyber security as being a key point that might advance common standards?

Platinum

I think, yes too many, buy collaboration is the future

Steel

sound works well after hitting button

Steel

Poll: Are there too many standards bodies and open source communities? Yes, No, why?

Author

Question for Robin: Do you see that as the role for SPs in the future? Taking advantage of SDN, virtualization, Open APIs  to integrate 3rd party apps? Almost like an SI, but on their own network, platforms?

Author

It was cookies problem.  OK now.

Steel

do we need to distinguish between 'hardware' standards and software specifications in this debate?

Author

@Alison just press the tiny grey player button on chrome and you will have aduio!

Steel

I had a problem with Chrome but IE works just fine.

Silver

Ad blocking plugins could be impacting chat message display. I just disabled mine to see if that helps...

Platinum

@Konsultor IE works as well. I'm in Chrome, I pressed the tiny grey player button and have audio.

Author

Dhagar - are you posing the question to the group or to Robin?

Platinum

on Firefox, but have NoScript and Badger in place to limit scrips and cookies.  Which domains are essential?

Steel

Chat may be delayed for some. You can refresh the browser to see the most recent messages.

Platinum

Fresh & humid in Talanepantla, Mèxico

Steel

Konsultor, are you using Chrome?

Author

Do you believe the standards that will evolve will be targeted to single vendors and technology or a larger collaboration of vendors and types of technology - i.e. a platform or ecosystem?

Platinum

If you're not hearing anything, press the tiny "play" button in the bottom left corner of the player area above to start the show.

Platinum

We're on day 10 of triple digit temperatures here.

Platinum

Player loaded.  Announcement that event is not available.  Still coming?

Steel

The show has started. Audio is working well.

Platinum

Nottingham, England - warm but cloudy.

Steel

One more time:

Important for Chrome users: We've heard that there are occasional issues with audio while using the Chrome browser. It's being fixed, but for today click the tiny gray circle that shows up when the player loads. Or switch over to Firefox, IE or Safari.

Author

London, and it's kind of sunny. Well...kind of.

Steel

IN the UK it's hard to see the weather for the dark political clouds hanging over the country...

Author

Great question, Adi!

Platinum

Hot and humid here in North Carolina!

Author

Looking forward to this show!

Author

Sometimes industry deployments move faster than standards can develop. I wonder if operators can ever really become "open"...

Author

Good day everyone!

Platinum

Very excited to hear Robin speak on this topic!

Steel

Good morning/afternoon everyone!  Remember to turn up your volume on the computers.  At the top of the hour an audio player will pop up on your screen.  If you don't see it, try to press F5 to refresh your screen. Remember, there's no slides for this it's just a discussion, so be sure to post your questions, comments and thoughts on the message boards and we will join you on the chat after the audio stream.

Author

Looking forward to the discussion.

Steel

I'm looking forward to the show!

Platinum

good to know :)

Author

same here :)

Platinum

Really looking forward to this radio show.

Silver

hope to see new faces :)

Platinum

should be interesting

Platinum

Hello to all :)

Platinum

The big question is -- which industry bodies/groups have the culture needed to embrace true collaboration? I'm sure all will talk about it but actions will speak louder than words. And I mean this as a broad question - this is not suggesting that the Broadband Forum does not have the culture to achieve this: Leadership dictates the culture and I know Robin is committed, buty will he find everyone as willing to cooperate in an open and truly collaborative way that benefits the industry?

Author

Looking forward to Thursday

Steel

Hello to all :)

Platinum

I would think this is a really critical issue for operators moving forward. Be interesting to see what Robin Mersh has to say.

Author

This looks good - looking forward to it!

Platinum

see (or hear) y'all next thursday!

Platinum

Should be a good discussion, looking forward to it!

Steel

Looking forward to participating!

Steel

Sounds like a very intersting topic for discussion.. Given the number of competing standards and open source projects that fork from a common origin, consolidation of open source and standards bodies doesn't seem possible -- but maybe collaboration between them is something we can hope to see more of....

Platinum

Thanks for the session!

Steel

Hope to attend and learn

Platinum

should be very interesting show and chat after

Platinum

Good topic. Need to think of the long term view

Steel

Happy Holiday Weekend, all.

Steel

Happy Holiday Weekend, all!

Steel

I can't wait for this radio show

Steel

Greetings & salutations all!

Steel
