Re: Big data
Unfortunately, I don't think companies like Google or Amazon have much of an incentive to use Differential Privacy techniques the way Apple does. But maybe Mozilla or other organizations might be able to popularize this approach to raise awareness of user privacy.

Re: Big data
@mhhf1ve, that sounds like an excellent tool!  That definitely can make a difference.

We need to find more "intelligent" ways to use technology and solve problems.

Thanks for sharing!

I'm hoping that Differential Privacy methods will become more popular and a widespread practice for anonymizing data, so that consumers aren't so vulnerable to privacy leaks....

Re: Big data
@afwriter, I am with you on the overkill on selling.

Here is where I disagree that we are doing the same thing we have always done.  I believe that our big data/analytics/cognitive computing give us the power to separate the blast advertising and to allow the customer to access the information that they find meaningful - ie "Intelligent Marketing".  That would go much farther in actually achieving sales and can be accomplished by better matching preferences, opt-outs/ins, etc.  If we can't figure a better way to serve the customers, than the data is only of value to the advertisers.

Re: Big data
@clrmoney, I agree big data will continue to evolve - but I think it is more than just behavior - I believe it is now used to better understand the "patterns" of choices that determine the behavior to pick up trends and more specifically design services/pricing that the customer wants.

Re: Big data
I am all about big data when it helps, but I don't love the idea of every move I make being tracked by an algorithm in order to try to sell me more stuff.  I get that that is the choice we make with our online presence though.  I believe that big data will continue to evolve as we do and will continue to be used in many positive ways.
