Re: hollywood losing digital
Big budget movies may always have a market, but it's a risky bet. Video markets like Youtube and Twitch are much more efficient, and these kinds of low budget production channels will probably take over the market, just how Android has more marketshare than Apple....

Asian video streaming...
Hollywood movies are definitely going to be threatened by a wave of Asian dramas that are produced at a fraction of the cost of blockbuster movies. Sure, there may be always some market for blockbuster superhero movies, but serial dramas are starting to spread globally. Korean "soap operas" could become mainstream global videos -- similar to how Gangnam Style translated to a huge viral music hit.

Bollywood movies, I've heard, are also becoming popular in Africa, oddly enough. Because Bollywood movies seem to resonate somehow with certain other cultures? Hollywood may be missing out a bunch of diverse cultural opportunities if it keeps trying to spread an "American" plot with a happy ending all over the world, again and again. Hollywood needs to diversify, too...

They will learn to let go or it will eventually be taken from them.  Hollywood needs to realize that they are not too big to fail and if they don't catch up with the times they will lose their empire.

Re: hollywood losing digital
It's interesting the way he put it - "Major players have so much invested," he says. "They have to hold on to it. But the key is letting go."

But that's tough to do when you have quarterly earning targets and revenue pressures and a established business that is decades old.

Interesting stat I came across some time back: Blockbuster's biggest year in revenue terms was the year before it went out of business.

Re: hollywood losing digital
As someone who lives in the area and knows some players in the game, Hollywood likes to think of itself in terms of "Old Hollywood."  They follow a formula, and always have: it doesn't want to spend a lot of money unless it's a big budget blockbuster.
