Re: Enhancing Advertising Capabilities
So true!
I've never actually watched an ad and then had to go and order o buy it! It would make ore sense to curve the ads towards people who would be interested in certain things. Younger generations aren't going to be interested in the same things as older people and vice versa.

4 key Areas of Video Innovation
These are interesting findings. It makes sense that next-generation TV services is an innovation area since TV is the top media watched by all ages.
OTT service delivery makes sense too since millions of users use OTT.
Enabling technologies/infrastructure is a good area for innovation.
Advertising is not a surprising area. Most companies focus on advertising but profiling is a new one as a top innovation area. Companies already uses cookies and capture consumer usage data. Profiling seems to get into shaky territory by accessing data that may or may not be protected, that should or should not be accessed without the consumer's knowledge.
Here is an article to limit your information being used for consumer profiling.

Re: VTAB 4 Areas
I wonder if partnering with Google fiber would accomplish this.

Re: Enhancing Advertising Capabilities
@faryl - that is amazing! A great example of digitizing a process without adding value or intelligence - it actually makes it worse. And we call that progress. That is the kind of approach that gives technology a bad name - investment without returns.

Re: Enhancing Advertising Capabilities
Back in the olden days, I worked for a mailing list brokerage firm - we had to fax our orders over because we only had internal email at the time :)
It's weird to me that direct marketing via snail mail is still better tailored according to individual recipient needs than any streaming product.

Re: Enhancing Advertising Capabilities
@faryl, those are good examples of smart advertising. Exactly, as they compile your interests and then connect you with those, it makes a much better connection and makes the advertising of value to you. Then it pays on both ends.

Re: Enhancing Advertising Capabilities
It bugs me because not only do I get stuck watching ads for stuff I would not buy, I don't ever see ads for new products that I *would* buy if I'd known about them.

Re: Enhancing Advertising Capabilities
I think Hulu had a great opportunity for a "freemium" subscription that required users to fill out demographic info useful to sponsors in order to access content.
Similar to the info cards people used to have to fill out to get free magazine subscriptions. Companies used that info to tailor mailing lists for a maximum success rate.

Re: VTAB 4 Areas
@dcawrey - good point. I think Netflix is offering some of their content in 4K. The problem is getting content that's been natively produced in 4K (its a new technology, so not a lot of library content) and then handling bandwidth. 4K takes a lot of space, which then means that you might need to toggle down to a lower profile if the network is congested - which defeats the purpose.

Re: Enhancing Advertising Capabilities
@faryl - its been a goal for payTV providers for a long time and the OTT space is actually moving a lot faster. But as you say, getting the nuts and bolts to function regularly is quite complex.
