Adi, sorry to be slow. Yes, I am thinking of new channels and deliverable networks.
Thank you for the invite!
Thanks Adi. How about we wrap it up with the results from the device poll at the start? I guess no surprise that TV was the winner?
It will be a mix. I think the US has been a leader initially, but the rights issues might actually be holding back innovation in some cases. It's often easier to get access to local content in other regions - the more developed the TV market, the more expensive the content. So we may see more interesting applications in places like China. Europe has developed differently, but I'm not sure I would say it is "behind" the US today. And thene there's just issues of capacity - networks in Korea (south, in case you were wondering), japan Singapore, HK are very fast and we are seeing a lot of innovation there. So I don't think it will be regional necessarily.
DHagar - are you suggesting that content acquisition etc. become web based when you say eco-system?
Thanks everyone for joining. Here's another question from earlier on:
Because of the more open environment with digital rights overseas, do we expect the US to be the leader, or will overseas providers lead?
I am thinking about the OTT being the consumer access to a combined video capability that is part of an ecosystem?
I see VR as a sort of special events type of applications - to be used either for specific events or activities. As you point out there's a huge technology challenge but also there are issues with headsets. One of the reasons for the failure of 3D as a home technology was the need for glasses. Jury is still out on how comfortable consumers will be with headsets. So maybe VR will work for very specific types of comms - medical maybe - but I don't see it working broadly for a while yet
Adi, Mike thank you for the show and many things coming along in the next 4 to 6 years!
That was great Mike and Adi. Great vision and insight about the future with big video!
Great show Mike and Adi. Learned a lot.
Adi, here's a questions from below: Is virtual reality ever going to make it as a commercial communications service? That's a whole other ballgame in terms of latency and required capacity, right?
@LightRay agreed! Thanks, Adi and Mike!
Great chat -- I feel that needs a sequal!
No, not too many but content will have to be tailored, improved
content providers don't want the content to leave your closed netork.
This was really good. Thank you!!!!
Mike, yes. That's where I believe his comments about forming alliances and building new ecosystems is the way forward.
Vote in the TT poll on right side of page!
No. The lesser of the bunch always drop off but they can add interesting ideas.
The general public wont know what OTT stands for
Not too many, but there will need to be more aggregation options. Long live the bundle!
this is not an option on the poll but.... every market has a different number of OTT options -- If 1,000 people in the general publci were asked, tghey would probably say they'd like more OTT options
Have other OTT providers been as successful as Netflix in creating original content?
I don't see consolidation because of the customization aspect. Advertising.
Not too many - good to have options
Europe is already leading.
Poll: Are there too many OTT providers and are we headed for consolidation? Yes, No, reason why
Because of the more open environment with digital rights overseas, do we expect the US to be the leader, or will overseas providers lead?
Live kitchen feed is an interesting idea!
What kind of testings phases would like to see
digital rights seem to be less of an issue overseas.
Found a picture of Mr. Kishore in front of a screen displaying "The Big Video Picture" at: http://www.telcotransformation.com/document.asp?site=telcotransformation&doc_id=724645&image_number=6
Maybe this is a document which could be made available to viewers?
Thanks,
That makes sense, Mike - which opens up the markets further.
Getting the digital rights has been our biggest challenge in streaming video.
@pl2002 that's interesting, thanks for sharing!
Cablevision has put UI into the cloud. makes for cheaper STBs, among other things.
Yes, I am thinking about the integration he is talking about (which is great) with the cloud. And will video move beyond entertainment and become a "connected" communication that is part of a network?
Build your own tv schedule changes broadcasting
Regarding curved TV's, we have them at work as well as seeing a few models sold at COSTCO. It does add a new dimension when you are pretty close to the screens.
@Michelle same here, I held out a long time for a deal on a smart TV
periscope/fb live but better? Interesting
@Kelsey good question. I never had any interest in curved TVs. I don't upgrade TVs every few years anyway... I especially avoid trendy TVs
@dhagar, do you mean beyond CCTV for security?
Wonder what happened with those curved TV's...did they ever take off in the market?
It's amazing we're in the future and 3D tv is a real thing
I am also wondering if we expect video to move beyond entertainment, and become a more utility for communications - public safety, connections with public services (cities), etc.?
Watch out for Adi's research insights on the site though....
There isn't for this one.
@Fred and @Hari123 this show is audio only
I would think that the content will be the ultimate driver. Who do you predict will take the lead on that?
Was wondering the same thing?
Q: is there a document to accompany the audio, or to be used as reference material?
Is virtual reality ever going to make it as a commercial communications service? That's a whole other ballgame in terms of latency and required capacity, right?
@Jared agreed, I was actually bummed when we landed b/c I hadn't finished the movie!
The show will be archived and available immediately after we finish the live interview.
Delta has come a long way; they are by far the best airline for me.
@Kelsey I didn't know Delta was offering in-flight entertainment like that. Did it cost extra?
Downloaded Delta's app on a recent flight - was really nice to be able to watch movies on my phone during the flight!
I agree, laptop and tv for me.
Probably split for me...TV and iPhone
still the TV set for me - I am a big screen person
I'd say its still TV for me but mobile device is second.
I forgot my snacks....but it's too late. Don't want to miss the start
Another beutiful day in the San Juan Islands
@Director same here, just brewed a cup of tea!
snacks/drink procured. Ready to start.
Good one @kelsey. I'd like to know if there are certain operators that moving faster to transform their networks to handle the increase in demand for mobile video than others -- and if so, what do those changes look like?
@Adi - are consumers watching significantly more long-form video on their mobile devices than say 2 years ago?
The countdown clock is at 8 minutes. Grab your snacks and maybe a drink. We'll be starting sooooon.
Very excited for today's radio show!
Can't wait to hear from Adi!
Hi from Chicagoland everyone!
Good morning/afternoon everyone! Remember to turn up your volume on the computers. At the top of the hour an audio player will pop up on your screen. If you don't see it, try to press F5 to refresh your screen. Remember, there's no slides for this it's just a discussion, so be sure to post your questions, comments and thoughts on the message boards and we will join you on the chat after the audio stream.
The impact of video is, I think, having as much impact on network planning as virtualization. And then, of course, you can combine the two.... looking forward to this and Adi's ongoing insights.
We have a new poll up folks, addressing a key area for OTT video: business models. We'll talk about it on the show, but feel free to fill it in. It's on the right hand side of the site, a little further down.
Looking forward to tomorrow's show.
Looking forward to a interesting discussion on Big Video tomorrow, I'm sure there will be some great questions.

@pamuditha, were you using a Chrome browser? We are having audio issues with Chrome but mentioned several times during yesterday's show that there was a gray button you need to click when the audio player comes up. Hopefully this will be fixed by next week.
I had some issues with joining yesterday's live chat and discussion.
Hopefully there will no any issues next week.
Hi everyone - hoping you can join us for an interesting session. Some general news and views on video, and some great insights from the MWC in Shanghai and our newly launched VTAB - the video transformation advisory board.
