Re: Ott Video and Summer Blockusters
@dcawrey - Maybe there is some kind of data telling Hollywood producers that they do have to have storylines across films, but I just don't see it. I suppose I consume sequels just as much as the rest of us, but I also enjoy a movie that exists by itself. In fact, I kind of tire of sequels. I was totally over X-Men, the only reason I even saw the last one was because Red Robin had a special where I basically saw the movie for free. Though I admit the movie pulled me back in and now I can't wait for the next X-Men.

Re: Ott Video and Summer Blockusters
Then there are shows like Doctor Who that have offered movie theater viewings for bigger episodes (like the anniversary special)

Very interesting! Yes and I totally agree with you. I would 100% rather be able to watch something and have it offend me than being told I can't watch something.

Re: Ott Video and Summer Blockusters
I'm not sure how that works these days - I think it depends on the network and whether it's cable or not? There's a movie/documentary called "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" that shows how the MPAA has (in my mind) a disproportionate amount of power over movie content that's released - it's also not a very transparent process. (I'm big on anti-censorship, so tend to lean more towards the "I'd rather there be content that offends me, than have someone making the decision about what I can/cannot watch" end of the spectrum.) :)

Re: Ott Video and Summer Blockusters
I had never considered the ratings aspect. This certainly would make getting shows to market a lot easier versus movies.

The ratings system for television I guess is relegated to the broadcast companies? I know they used to show ratings like "TV-MA" and such...

Re: Ott Video and Summer Blockusters
I think it's subjective - plus a lot of that stuff is cultural, so nudity (for example) doesn't have the same connotations as it does in the US. But the nice thing with VOD is it's up to us what we watch when :) So we have control of what we expose ourselves to.

Re: Ott Video and Summer Blockusters
I would humbly suggest that they go hand in hand.   Shouldn't that be a consideration or am I being too old-fashioned?  I wonder....

Ah - so not a quality issue, more of a ratings/standards issue :)

Re: Ott Video and Summer Blockusters
Happy to explain--there is no control at all in Europe on Television.  I have avoided watching television while traveling in Europe.   As such, such ratings and control and the FCC should be welcome.

Re: Ott Video and Summer Blockusters
What do you mean by "like Europe"? :) I think ratings are helpful - but I don't like that the MPAA and the studios/theaters have conflicts of interest which make its rating system de facto censorship.
