@Joe I'm gonna go with 'probably none'. I understand the need to remind consumers about a brand, but we're seeing a silly number of ads in too many places these days.

Re: advertising and data...
mhhf1ve,

And yet on the flip side, being used for a large array of never-envisioned things was part of the explosive growth of YouTube and Facebook.  (This thread is getting so many flip sides it's up to being at least a dodecahedron, and reminding me of Harry Truman's plea for a "one-handed economist").

Re: advertising and data...
Joe -- there definitely seems to be some benefit in restricting the things users can do on a social media site. Twitter is also having problems focusing because no one is really sure what Twitter "is for" -- is it for public protests, is it for real-time chatting, is it for customer service channels, shameless self-promotion? Twitter is doing "too much" and doesn't seem to appeal to a particular (or profitable) audience.

@Michelle: How many of us HAVE bought something because of an online ad?

And of those of us, how many have done so more than once?

Re: advertising and data...
@Michelle: The best part about Tumblr, to me, feature/platform-wise, is that you can make your Tumblr page just about *anything* you want.  It can be a photo stream, a traditional blog, a video or audio stream/blog, a variety, etc.

Of course, that ultra-flexibility could have been part of it's downfall.  People used to be able to customize their MySpace pages in almost infinite ways -- and that wound up being the most despised aspect of MySpace, and led to its downfall.

@Ariella I agree with you about Tumblr being a mess business-wise. It's a shame it was managed so poorly. I really like the user interface and some of the features.

@Ariella clearly ;) I never bought anything from Yahoo. I hardly even used it so I saw few ads. Were you ever a fan?

Re: advertising and data...
Tumblr was always a great platform that was always horribly mismanaged and never had a decent business model.  I wouldn't be surprised to see it go the way of Blogger, which is a shame on the one hand...but on the other hand, Tumblr IS a mess.
