Google bet on the Search coming out on top and by golly they were right. Yahoo on the other hand put their eggs in the communications and communities basket and lost big time. Sometimes you gamble and lose.

Re: I see the logic of this move, but...
@vnewman Yes, no one says, "Let me Yahoo that" in spite of the commercials that tried to push the verb. I still remember hearing "I Yahooed, and I found it," but only in the commercials and not in real life.

Interestingly enough the deal does NOT include Yahoo's stakes in Alibaba and Yahoo Japan. That's the most savvy thing Yahoo has done in a long time!

@vnewman, that is a great point! Absolutely, they may be holding onto the crown jewels.
Verizon's plans sound good if they can open up new markets. If not, I think they have limits on what Yahoo will bring to the table.

Re: advertising and data...
Pardon me while I return from another era...good points all around. Yahoo and MSFT Bing are buds, not rivals. Yahoo's decision to give up on search and outsource to Bing kinda slipped my mind.
I think it's prediction time -
- Flickr will stay on as an asset to VZ
- Tumblr will languish until it's phased out in favor of something else entirely

Yahoo-ing never really caught on. I only remember the cowboy fella screaming Yahooooooo! in commercials. It was a different time way back then.

@Michelle Glad I'm not the only one who remembers the commercials!

I thought they were cheesy and not very effective back then. I suppose I was wrong considering how clearly I remember them now.

@Michelle cheesy can be memorable, but that alone was not enough to make Yahoo take off the way it had hoped.
