One other thing that I like to find out is how compatible these kits would be in terms of integration with any opensorce platform. Anyone?

Can't agree more. This is just the begining for these kits. I would expect to see many more along the way but surely to see matured versions.

Are the developer kits for IOT comparable to APIs that make the technology more widely accessible; or is chiefly geared at larger/more experienced developers, similar to an OS X developer's kit?

I guess we'll start seeing more IoT developer kits in the near future. I just read about GE's kit for Predix, and now this one from AT&T. If you're not building for the connected things future, you may be left behind -- or so the saying might go
