Re: Product placement
@Adi It also appear that providers sometimes change their models. I saw that Hulu is planning on ending its free TV service. As per http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/hulu-end-free-tv-service-917917

"For the past couple years, we've been focused on building a subscription service that provides the deepest, most personalized content experience possible to our viewers," says Ben Smith, Hulu senior vp and head of experience. "As we have continued to enhance that offering with new originals, exclusive acquisitions, and movies, the free service became very limited and no longer aligned with the Hulu experience or content strategy."

@batye that reminds of the time (and it may have only been once) that we watched an episode of Monk on the official TV site for it. It kept running the same ad for Lipton Green Tea with Bubbles. It got incredibly annoying.

Re: Finding the Right Business Model
Batye, exactly.. most of the ad-supported streaming video platforms (except Youtube) have very limited ad inventory. The eye balls and the advertisers just have hit the tipping point yet -- plus it's much harder to produce video ads that are targeted for a niche audience (than it is to produce video ads meant for a broadcast audience).

Youtube at least has a decent stockpile of semi-targeted video ads to match up with its content. Hulu and others seem to still be struggling with ad inventory -- because if you watch enough Hulu, you'll get bored by the same ads shown over and over and over...

Video Business
I know there many a few independent video business companies so there may be some competition so may they should come up with a better marketing/advertising plan in the virtual world.

Product placement
One aspect the article did not explore was the emergence of product placements in the content itself. Obviously that's not a pay-TV model, it's a producer model because it has to be done at the production stage. But we do see more paid agreements for brands to insert themselves into storyline. The danger is that they subvert the plot, which can get problematic...."I'll just call him on my magnificent iPhone 6S with its fantastic retina display, etc. etc."
