Zero rating and battery life
@jason - in the handset storage approach described above, who is effectively "paying" for the data download? Does it come out of the customer's data package or is it being zero rated by the MNO?
Also, is there an impact on the phone battery? or does it have to be plugged in and on wifi like an iCloud backup?

@Adi - Data usage is a big concern - or at least it would be for me. I pay a ridiculous amount for the data I already get and it's so easy to go over if I don't watch what I'm doing. A few trips to Target with my kids watching YouTube while my phone isn't on WiFi and I'll suddenly start getting alerts about data usage. I consume videos a lot, but you start hitting my wallet, and I'll jump ship quick too. I can't afford it.

@elizabethv I change all my contracts for the cells on Pay-As-you Go, with only WiFi data... but in Canada we do have many horror stories - http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/forum-cellphone-data-overage-1.3497123

@batye I also use Pay-as-you-go plans. I'm a very light user, so it didn't make sense to shell out so much per month for something that doesn't get used so much.

@Ariella I think at the present economy most users gonna be switching to pay as you go as economical solution...

@batye I don't know if it fits everyone's needs, but it works for me. My daughter also signed up for a pay-as-you-go plan for her phone now, though with the purchase, the first month's service was a higher tier plan that included data.

This is Jason. To answer your question, it would be a case-by-case situation. Zero-rated traffic is paid for by the content owner. They could elect to do that or no to. Otherwise, it would come out of the consumer data plan (unless they downloaded the content over wifi which would probably be the case most of the time).
As to the battery, yes, I'm sure there would be an impact as the radio would be engaged during download (and that is a major drain on the battery).

LTE-B & Use cases
@jason - are you seeing a lot of use cases for LTE-B? There's a clear fit with sports, and we hear a lot about in-stadium replays. But are there other cases where operators are actively looking to use broadcast?

@Adi in Canada yes, I would say Rogers keep trying actively looking to use broadcast... but only in some areas like big cities... for example in Toronto/GTA Ontario

This is Jason. Great question. I think that as more MSOs launch IPTV solutions (to enable their subs to watch broadcast content wherever they are), it will make a lot more sense for a multicast solution like LTE-B. In my opinion, LTE-B + IPTV = DVB (without the need for a special chip in the handset). So not just sports and one-off events but true linear broadcast to the handset.

Mobile videos has become popular so that the operator are coming up with solutions like LTE and CDN so lets how that works.

I agree. They are becoming so popular. I enjoy them and I think a lot more people now watch videos from their phones than on actual tv's.
