@afwriter - I also think it comes down to this: Cable is easy.  You turn it on.  Browse the channels.  It's like going shopping.  Or gambling.  You never know what you will find or if you will hit the jackpot.  And don't forget the nostalgia factor.

Content is King
I wonder what would happen if the most popular shows (Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Better Call Saul, et al.) were to suddenly go off the air at the same time.  In other words, if these popular shows on premium networks disappeared would cable still have as many subscribers? 

I truly believe that most people still have cable packages to watch only a handful of shows that they can't get anywhere else.

Cables futures
Cable offers a vartiety of channesl so I'm not surprised with the success of their businesses because many people use that service.
