I agree! I think it's important for companies to evolve, whether they're comfortable with the chnages or not. It's crucial to stay ahead of the game or at the very least keep up with it.

Re: Real world experiences...
Great article. However, AT&T along with other companies seem to focus the one-team culture on the technical support staff. The one-team culture needs to be implemented throughout the company because products impact the entire organization either directly or indirectly. Each team or department has a role in ensuring that a product or service is delivered successfully.

AT&T remains a leader in technology. Virtualization is here to stay and companies must embrace it to remain competitive and reduce operational costs.

@Mike Robuck, that's unfortunate AT&T didn't want to comment. Their comments and/or lessons learned could help another company or startup so they won't repeat the same mistakes or will know how to handle the issue it if arises.

@mhhf1ve  so just an update that AT&T declined to comment on the hackathons.

While I'm in here, Saxena spoke about"shifting left," which seems to be a big part of DevOps thinking. Here's more on shifting left.

I think "bounty programs" like the Netflix Challenge (and other "bug bounty" offers) may be slightly more practical than hackathons -- especially for "out of the box" thinking and skills.

The DARPA challenges are also a good way to get "out of the box" thinking and solutions to difficult problems. Not so sure I've seen similar results with hackathons. But there are far more hackathons...

Good point. Though hackathons are probably a good way to see more "out of the box" thinking/skills - they allow for problem-solving without the constraints of a corporate culture (e.g., worrying if the solution will "fly" with upper managment, waiting for solutions to go through the project management office to be implemented, or even just feeling under-valued) and are a good way for companies to get a broader perspective of a candidate's skill sets in a condensed period of time.

@dcawrey, good perspective!  It is the fail-fast in full implementation.

But they do appear to have a sharp focus and to be taking steps to build these new capabilities necessary to develop new products.  So I believe they have a plan.

I am hopeful they will succeed and develop a new pathway to success.

Re: Real world experiences...
I think this is all about AT&T trying different things just to see what sticks. This is more of a startup mentality than most are used to, but its necessary in order to find out what works in cutting edge technology.
