@faryl - Indeed. It does seem likely that a free, high quality, legal version of a title would steer people away from illegal services. Advertising, provided it's limited, should be a small price to pay for free content. But ultimately I suppose it is less to do with a service, and more to do with the shows themselves.

yes, I think that is an important differentiator for Viu - the speed at which they can get versions out there with multiple languages. Asia has so many languages it can be problematic, and many viewers speak just one language, or perhaps english and their mother tongue. It will be interesting to see if Netflix can match this - I suspect they will.

That is good to know, atleast there is good intention. Yes, we need to know more information about how this approach would play in practice to make content legal.

I found that part interesting as well.
I've read that some content providers believe that a large portion of those who pirate content in the US would be willing to pay for it if were available legally.
My guess is that this is probably different in different markets, but I'm interested in how the freemium option might play into that.

I agree.
It's super nitpicky, but it bugs me that HBO go doesn't separate out content by languages. Granted, it's usually just a few movies that are in Spanish and is nothing compared to the number of languages the Asian market must encounter.

We have developed local language meta tag search, so users can look for programming in their own language. And we have developed and patented some unique adaptive bit rate technology from Vuclip, to facilitate streaming for markets that have infrastructural challenges, with low bandwidth. This allows us to offer a smoother video experience to our customers even in emerging markets.
Very good start focussing at user experience. way to go....
Less Piracy
The other interesting point about Freemium model is - to bring down the piracy. As i read i belive there could be an option to bring those cases into a legal model.
