JohnBarnes, You're very correct. The field of healthcare is riddled with pitfalls and liability. The placebo (and nocebo) effect can really mess up medical treatments and scientific understanding -- and as you say, spur unwarranted trust in snake oil salesmen. And more data won't necessarily help to counteract that. Big data can just mean more garage in and garbage out....

On the third hand, maybe eventually we can hire doctors who are actually actors, very good at looking like wise old healers while they just say whatever the big-data-driven algorithms tell them to.  Best of both worllds.
