Re: Coffee shops
I totally agree. There's better coffee out there, but Starbucks makes it more reachable. They're able to make it a quicker experience for the consumers.

Re: Coffee shops
@vnewman, good points, it is not enough to just respond, but as you point out be able to respond quickly, if not real time.

This is a great presentation of the transformation that takes place with SDN/NFV.  I would add one more points, beyond the complex networking - to make things simple - there is also now new opportunities to use the data to solve opex problems, market with social media, and build awareness of the coffee shop.

Re: Coffee shops
And this is a fantastic example of why Starbucks just works even if you can get better coffee somewhere else.   As an IT worker, I have to be available no matter where I am and able to jump on a network at the drop of a hat.  Check.  I don't want to carry cash.  There's an app for that.  I want to pre-order and have my beverage ready when I arrive.  Check. Check.

It's not just about the coffee.  They get it.

Re: Coffee shops
@afwriter true, though that can be run on a pretty basic connection that doesn't require much bandwidth. Actually, I popped into a local branch of a chain retailer this week and was informed they could not process any credit card payments because their phone connection was down. This was yesterday, and they said they had been disconnected since Saturday. The telecom that serves my area (one of the big names, I assure you) is not known for fast service.

Re: Coffee shops
Even if they did not provide Wifi for their guests there is still the issue of an infrastructure for the point of sale devices.  I had never thought of how much infrastructure it takes to run something as straight forward as a coffee shop.
