Re: AT&T Part II More Talks
@mpouraryan, that is true and those are good points.

My view is that cost-cutting is a priority until there is something better that you want, and then you go get it - creating a new market (ie iPhones, Samsung, 4K).  Then we spend because we want it.

Re: Sports
@Mike, I think it is the primary driver in entertainment today - both in ratings as well as in services/purchases.  That makes great sense for 4K.

Re: AT&T Part II More Talks
Although I am pleased to see such evolution, I still am trying to align this evolution with the continued cord cutting blood letting that seems to be the order of the day?

Thoughts folks?

Re: Sports
Brian Burns, who launched ESPN HD, always claimed it helped accelerate HDTV sales in the mid-2000s, when they really took off. Not the most objective source exactly, but I remember seeing Wimbledon for the first time in HD, and you could see each blade of grass. Maybe he had a point.

I heard the 4K Masters coverage of Amen Corner was stunning. As he said, sports can be the big driver for 4K in the early days.

Re: AT&T Part II More Talks
The create vs. license debate is always a tricky one. If you are a small company with limited resources then it's simple: you must focus on one thing and get really good at it. But for someone this size, there's always the option of really kicking off the UHD space by adding high-quality content in UHD, and pulling away from the competition. AT&T seem to be moving quite carefully in that direction. They've put together a UHD channel, but it's mostly second run stuff aggregated into one channel. But they are also cherry picking events and building a sports-based value proposition for AT&T/DirecTV. That could work out pretty well. Fits with DirecTV's positioning, and sports show off higher resolution well.

@afwriter, whether that is luck or skill I am not sure - but I agree that they are perfectly positioned to be a winner!  They are making all the right moves.  They won't need to be in content production if they succeed.

This is great to see!

Re: AT&T Part II More Talks
I think AT&T has put themselves in a perfect position to be an industry influencer with 4K.  They most likely won't be getting into content production, but they will definitely have a hand in distribution and hardware to a certain extent.
