Re: CMOS Lead Digital
Yes, Im pleased to see the chnages happenig in the US. And I loved what you said about the people coming first and the technology coming second. I fully agree with you and think it should always be this way.

CMOS Lead Digital
Great information about digital transformation. Good article on the progress being made in the U.S and abroad.

Glad to see that CMOs are taking charge versus always the CIO or CTO. Almost twice as many CMOs are leading the digital transformation efforts.

I believe it was always about people first and then technology second.  CIOs believe it is about technology first then people second.

Re: about people
@elizabethv, thanks!  I see this as the real untapped potential in ROI.  We can keep it under wraps or unleash its true value.  The opportunity to realize greater profits should drive further user value.

Re: about people
@DHagar - That's a great point. Once the company as a whole sees the benefit in the changes made by CMO's, they will embrace the direction and technology much more completely. No business doesn't like to make money. :-)

Re: about people
People first – an interesting perspective.

This is true. While CIOs and CTOs are focused on process and infrastructure, CMOs are much more outward facing. Digital isn't easy, but it can be done more completely when you consider the human aspects.

Wise - if not obvious
This seems like it would be the most intelligent way for any business to conduct changes. Shouldn't they start with the customer in mind? You would think anyway. If you make technology easier, and more accessible for the customer, wouldn't that continue to drive business? The majority of customers for any company are at least to some extent already using technology (who doesn't have a smart phone? The numbers I'm sure are staggeringly low.) When I worked for the University of Phoenix they were constantly talking about improvements to the student website, what they could do for the students ability to access their classes, make it easier, faster and better. Simultaneously, they released a new system for employees to use to keep track of our work. It was appalling! It was like they used all of their technological know-how to ensure the student programs were top-of-the-line, and then some C somewhere let his nephew design the program used by employees out of a favor to the family. It was barely a step better than DOS. I was flabbergasted when they first interested it to us. If they had released a program like that to students, people would have been dropping it so quick the stocks couldn't have kept up.

Re: about people
@Ariella, thanks.  Yes, C-level is needed to truly transform.

Also, in the design now, if we stop short of delivering the information (the output of technology) to operations and other non-technical people, we will limit the ROI.  When the business-case users begin to use and change their operations and decisions and achieve better results, then you truly have strong results that will support and advance true transformation.

Re: about people
@DHagar good observation on remembering the impact of transformation on users. The challenge if for the C-level people to people themselves in those shoes.

Re: about people
@Ariella This may be because CIOs are tasked with extracting business information from the raw data, which inevitably drags them down into the weeds of day-to-day.

Where CTIOs have been created, this can facilitate a heads up view of the real-time world.

Entirely agree with the people and process first, ahead of technologies to bring about the change required. Achieving those goals inevitably means introducing technology enablers to realise the change

Re: about people
@Mike, great info and encouraging!

Interesting note from overseas.  I see more CIO's as inhibiting transformation as well - they are solely influenced by the technology features and fail to consider the true transformation will be at the user level.

These dinosaurs need to retire to their caves.
