Re: Power User
The question about the practical usefulness of viewer data seems be a common thread among stories about viewing habits. Hopefully we're approaching the point that the companies who create the surveys will start to recognize the importance of designing them to include the right questions to make the resulting data more useful (i.e., get answers to the kind of questions being raised after reading the current surveys' results)

Re: Power User
Anyone else dislike having to watch videos to get information? One of my pet peeves is clicking on a link and finding out it's a video with no transcript. I think it's partly because I can't "skim" a video to get to the point.

Re: bandwidth
That would be nice...AT&T just implemented caps on their uverse usage. We're definitely bandwidth hogs here though - both of us like having shows on as background noise, so it's not uncommon for both tv's to be streaming Netflix, while one of us also watches "video shorts" on our phones. (I also leave parks & rec playing on Hulu to keep the dog company if I'll be out for a while!)

OTT Power Use Habits
The only reason mobile devices account for the majority of video streamed is because it is a feature on most cell phones. If the feature was not able, the video streaming metric would be from the internet.

More people are watching videos and webinars than ever before and more video and streaming content is being produced at a rapid rate. Viewers have lots of content to choose from and are taking advantage of those options.

The attention span on viewers has declined greatly, after tha first 3-5 seconds some viewers start to lose interest. Videos viewed for longer than five minutes are probably from Youtube and cable subscribers where viewers actually select what they want to watch.

I would like to see more details data about the 98% for Android and iOS devices streaming the most videos. That number seems inflated.

Viewers have more options available to them to watch streaming videos and are taking advantage of those options which is why the Apple share has declined to 65%.

Re: Power User
This is some interesting data. Hopefully providers can use this to assume what people want to watch.

Although I think the ability to do that is far off, someday it would be useful. Currently, OTT discovery is a massive consumer of users' time.

Re: Power User
@elizabethtv - that's certainly the goal, to use this data to drive more video viewing. To identify power user habits and structure the experience so that it caters to them. For example, promoting advertising sponsored content on weekdays, and pushing for new release movies and TV shows to launch on Fridays or saturdays, just in time for the binge.

Re: Power User
@clrmoney - it's hard to go on the internet anymore, from any device, and not run into a video to watch. Most news articles come with a video, just about anything you try to research, video is in many ways, the ground internet usage stands on. It's no surprise that video watching is up, especially on mobile devices. And I'd imagine there are more "Power Users" coming more people move to using OTT.

Re: bandwidth
It is slow going because of costs and capabilities but I use my Amazon Echo as the hub and I have lights set up around the house, I tried to do the thermostat, but I can't get that to work unless I rewire it.  My next plan is to automate the blinds so I can tell them to open and close whenever.  I love the fact that I can control things in my house with only my voice.  My plan is to eventually automate everything I possibly can from the front door to the bathroom.

Re: bandwidth
On Adi's radio show this morning, Jason said service providers were moving away from bandwidth caps due to streaming. That would be a big turnaround. I'm interested in hearing about this IoT network you're building!
