If I were going to take a guess, I'd say the Roku Express is aimed at taking a bite out of the Amazon Fire Stick market. I recently needed to buy a second Amazon Fire Stick, for a second TV, and mildly entertained the idea of getting a Roku, until I saw they were twice the price. Maybe functionality is better and that's the reason for the price difference, but for me, I know a Fire Stick would suffice for the purposes I needed, so there was no point in looking at additional features for a greater cost. If I'd seen a Roku similarly priced to the Fire Stick, I probably would have checked it out.

I got my mom a roku so she can watch Hulu & netflix when she's traveling.
I think rokus make great gifts!

I know I keep harping on the analogy to color television -- but here it is again: color TV sales entered teh explosive growth phase when there were fewer than ten hours per week of color programming and half the stations in the country (admittedly, mostly backwater places) didn't broadcast in color. And once color receivers were more than about 20% of the market, broadcast TV rolled over and almost all programs went to color in a less than two year period.
Roku looks to me like they've done as good a job (as anyone can judge before we see how it works out) of catching the wave. Now we will see where they end up. But if the new streaming players sell well, there is going to be a lot more 4K available to play on them within a short time.

I think there's a significant "marginal benefit" difference between the transition from black&white to color TV and HDTV to UHD video... but your point is taken. Ultimately, progress will make all SDTVs obsolete and SD video will be as hard to find as a 8 track cassette player.

I also can't wait to see what other features they come out with! If Roku is already taking over consumers from other devices, I wonder what other devices will be over thrown.

I suspect the reason that adoption and deployment of technological improvements follows a logistic curve is that dialogue between the software and hardware demands and availability. The combined effect of two different r(1-r) structures inside a set of constraints between 0 and 100% pretty much forces the curve into that shape.
