Thanks for all the info.
Steel

thanks as well from me

Steel

thanks for a great presentation

Steel

In case anyone missed the start, it will be in on demand mode later today.

Author

Thanks for the great show and discussion today!

Platinum

Thanks for your answers, I appreciate it!

Thank you all for your interest!  Until next time....

Thanks, John - very informative!

Platinum

Alwasy interested in additonal content and partners!  Would love to get soccer on the air here!

Ok folks, we're out of time. Want to thank you all for fantastic questions and engagement, and please join me in thanking John for joining us today and sharing his thoughts on UHD.

Author

What are DirectTV's plans for thefuture - priorities, etc.?

Platinum

Adi - not sure about your last question.  I wish I, along with other CE guys, had an accuarte answer!

thanks. With other networks moving towards 4K channels, like Sky in the UK, will you be able to partner and carry live sports over, like football (soccer)?

Sorry, yes, meaning it is down converted to a smaller resolution

Thanks - sounds good!

Platinum

heh, so "downrezzed" that's a technical industry term, right?

Platinum

Yes my Samsung 4k/UHD is best I'd seen for regular 1080 HD. I do have DirecTV, but the 4k content is very imited

Steel

Never saw the 8K video from Rio.

John - is there a penetration threshold that you think will accelerate investment and interest "upstream" in the industry, given that 4-year adoption cycle for new TVs?

Author

I thought the 8K content downrezzed to 4K looked fantastic.  We aired some MLB games this summer which looked as good as the Olympics footage.  Oddly enough, Beach Volleyball with the white sand looked amazing!

Were you able to see any of NHK's 8K video?

wilcoski - was it noticeably superior?

Platinum

Adi, Olympics content was stored on servers in Rio - NBC played it out "live to air" taped delayed to us.

So looking at our responses, 4 years seems the most common response, which matches the statistics for the US. Average HH buys a new TV every four years.

Author

Wokring between video and data groups is alwasy a struglle - and probbaly will always be!

@JWard thanks for answering my storage question

Platinum

bought 4k TV in Dec 2015

Steel

Another question - During the Olympics, when you were showing day-after content, what kind of storage approach did you use for the 4K content? Did you go to the cloud, or was that end managed by NBC?

Author

If we look back over the last perhaps 15 years, bit rate from the lastest encoders has seemed to keep up with the highest tier consumer video programming. For example, MPEG2 720p encoded at about 19 Mbps; Netflix is encoding their 2160p at roughly 17 Mbps.  Is this a correct observation?  Do you expect it to continue?

Silver

Who are your main competitors in UHD?

Platinum

Storage has been a challnege.  Teravytes of data from just one live event whn you consider all of the cameras angles.  Tons of local storage to get to a SAN back at our broadcast center.  Cloud storage needs a huge pipe in oder to move content ina  timnely manner.  We are still working through storage for sure,

vnewman - good point - it's like the Google glasses - we don't take to gimmicks well - we want a more sophisticated solution.

Platinum

Not sure of our UHD plans for U-verse at this point.

To evalaute 4K quaity - I do not know of "consumer" tools.  We are using professional video tools in the field to esnure things like timings between quadrants, lip sync in audio, etc.  Ultimately it is up to the customer to see for themselves.  Side by side with an HD show helps to see differences...

I think Americans in general have a low interest level to 3D in general - even 3D movies haven't ever caught on like they have in say, China, where something like 8 out of 10 movies released are in 3D.  I think in our society we prefer to have the fewest amount of variables in the mix - adding in glasses everytime you want to watch something is kind of a dealbreaker.

Platinum

Is ATT looking at rolling out UHD on Uverse?

Author

As an aside... I've observed over many years a communication gap between the video folks and the data networking folks. It's really hard for the latter to get an answer to the pressing (for them) question of how much bandwidth do we need per stream. Do you see that inside AT&T?

Silver

Because of AT&T's innovative leadership in developing ecosystems - how do you see this advanced technology capability supporting you being a competitive advantage with DirectTV into the future?

Platinum

How will the netork evolve for the extra bandwdith needed?  It will have to - it will always come down to technology and the compression improvements that coem with time.  More bits for your buck!

@JWard thanks for taking my question -- helpful

Platinum

And here's another - Does HEVC encoding vary based on the content? Sports vs. animated films, for example.

Author

There's your answer, Michelle!

Platinum

Great question about DIRECTV Now - I am not that close to it but I do not know about our 4K OTT plans as of yet.

@jward that makes a lot of sense, thanks for addressing my question!

Author

3D was a tough sell - the glasses needed for one.  You had to charge them, you needed extra pairs for guests.  Too much work.  Also, bad 3D produciton could really hurt your eyes!  We had a 3D channel at one point but we folded it once it was clear that content was becoming harder to come by.

Great discussion!@ Learned a lot even thouogh I have had 4K for two years. Thank you.

Let's start with this one - Will 4K be included in the upcoming DirecTV skinny bundle - DIRECTV NOW?

Author

@Adi we care a lot about TV, apparently :)

Platinum

Does HEVC encoding vary based on the content? Sports vs. animated films, for example.

Author

re: content, will the TimeWarner acquisition open up the 4K content library?

Wow! we've certainly got a huge list of questions from the audience.

Author

I think you will be hard pressed to find a TV that is not 4K capable - any new sets coming out will come with this functionality.

@vnewman I agree! Do you think it was just too expensive for many consumers or there just wasn't really a demand for it to begin with?

Author

In marketing to the customers - what are the top 3 value-added capabilities that they have identified for upgrading to 4K?

Platinum

@DHagar heh :) my eyes need major upgrades. 3D is default (which is really nice)

Platinum

Is there a DIRECTV pub that describes rhe UHD and 4K channels? I wouyld love to obtain one.

Duh - great question!

Platinum

Still on the bandwidth topic... please talk about OTT and what used to be called U-Verse TV.

Silver

@Kelsey - I feel like the interest level for 3D TVs never got about sea level :)

Platinum

How do we evaluate video quality on 4K content from the customer perspective, is there any tools available in the market?

Steel

@Michelle - a new option - 3D!

Platinum

I feel like I should be upgrading my glasses just to watch this cotent. heh, can we get an HD upgrade for our eyeballs?? :D

Platinum

Does he see, with the lower cost and new technology solutions, the opportunity to change the pricing packages now?

Platinum

Which are the drivers from his perspective - the upstream or the downstream players?

Platinum

@Kelsey I'm not a fan of soap opera speed (or soap opera sound effects for that matter)...

Platinum

@Kelsey I haven't noticed speed issues with refresh rate. We notice different film speeds for different shows, but not on all programming from the TV's settings.

Platinum

Good question on bandwidth. Interested in how the network will evolve to the increased bandwidth demand.

Author

@Michelle good question, I haven't heard about them in awhile! Just curious - have you ever experienced the "soap opera effect"? It's when every channel has the feel of a soap opera, I think it's from a 240Hz refresh rate.

Author

Is there work that needs to be done with audio in regards to HDR?

Author

not learn --- glad to hear backward compatibility is being built in

Platinum

I'm excited to learn about backward compatibility!

Platinum

What about curved TVs? Does anyone care about them anymore?

Platinum

Have consumers lost interest in 3D TVs?

Author

From the perspective of the networking folks, the biggest questions about 4k, 8k and HDR are about bandwidth demand, and how much is needed to support customer demands. Please discuss in detail.

Silver

auto artful colorization, nice

Platinum

What's next for encoding?

Author

*save directly to a hard drive

Platinum

Hi @Dhager - -nice to see you :)

Platinum

@Michelle - as a customer, I recall that they currently do but not sure about the 4K video...

Platinum

What kind of storage do you use for this super duper high resolution content? Do you save directly to a HD or auto add to a cloud asset manager or something?

Platinum

Where was the 8K Rio footage shown? Could you see much of a difference?

Author

Te:  Telco Radio Chat

Hi, All!

Platinum

slightly off-topic, but may come up: Will DirectTV be competing in the slim bundling package push we're seeing with other providers? Will 4K video be included in such packages? Super HD slim bundles maybe?

Platinum

Good day everyone!

Platinum

@Mike you have very nice neighbors

Platinum

@Mike we overpaid for HDTV too - -we paid for a very 'stupid' smart TV feature set.

Platinum

Good afternoon everyone!  Remember to turn up your volume on the computers.  At the top of the hour an audio player will pop up on your screen.  If you don't see it, try to press F5 to refresh your screen. Remember, there's no slides for this it's just a discussion, so be sure to post your questions, comments and thoughts on the message boards and we will join you on the chat after the audio stream.

Author

Five years, overpaid on HDTV. Neighbors gave us a 50-inch HDTV this summer after they upgraded to 4K

Author

I had forgotten about that acquisition

Platinum

poll answer: 4+ years ago

Good to be here this afternoon!

Author

Hi All. Audio was delayed a bit but it's on now!

Platinum

the player should start automatically - if not, refresh the page

Platinum

is there any audio right now? Music??

Steel

Chat seems to be working fine for me, Michelle.

Author

@Liz I'm seeing a lag on chat this morning.

Platinum

{testing chat again} What is everyone working on this week? Any projects you wish were done weeks ago? I can't wait to move on from mine...

Platinum

hi everyone... eagerly waiting to start...

Steel

Hello to all    -  4K :) time soon be here :)

Platinum

Greetings & salutations everyone!

Steel

FYI: chat seems delayed right now. hopefully that clears up at the start of the show.

Quick primerbefore the show - my interview with John here.

Author

Hi all - 4K is coming to a screen near you later today. Well...admittedly, it's not 4K video, it's an audio discussion about 4K. But it's going to be a great discussion with someone who is really pushing the industry forward for this technology.

Author

Hello to all I'm also Looking forward to the radio show.
