FCC plans for Set Top Boxes?
Hmm. I have to wonder how the FCC might factor into the future of STB virtualization. Looks like STBs might be turned into "apps" on various devices....

OTT STB
Glad Adi asked the question of why not just use an OTT STB. Makes sense that control over the data and customer experience would be a driving factor in the decision not to use an OTT STB.

It's almost there already, My TV has Roku built in already.  I know its not the same, but it is a step in that direction.

User Interface
"They have a better UI, a better guide."

I really believe that this is the most important factor in consumer satisfaction.  If it's hard to navigate people aren't going to bother with it.

Set Top
Set Top has a lot of challenges ahead for them but I thinbk they will be able to sell some STB boxes at a reasonable price so overall I think that this is a great idea for them.

Re: User Interface
@afwriter - I think that's exactly right. And SPs understand that now, or say they do. I think the navigation experience has improved a lot with some providers, but the complexities involved have also increased - it's not a simple 20 linear channel world anymore.

@mhhf1ve -  Legislation shows up just when the technology is obsolete?

Re: FCC plans for Set Top Boxes?
If I may be pedantic for a moment: the FCC would regulate and promulgate regulations -- pursuant to their powers granted them by both Congressional legislation and the President.

As for the point itself...people still use obsolete technology here and there.  Whether or not additional laws and/or regulations are desirable or overall beneficial, of course, is another matter altogether.

Re: FCC plans for Set Top Boxes?
Regulations are generally playing catchup to technology, so we probably won't see the FCC aiming for where the puck is going to be.

@Joe - Fair point, that should have been regulation, not legislation.
