Re: democratic process
@John: I have no problem "getting" New Yorker cartoon jokes, and many of them are quite good.  Many others, however, I feel are lazy and sort of miss the mark in terms of true funny-bone tickling (the famous/infamous "Fusilli" one comes to mind) -- and I have certainly been nonplussed with some of the winners of the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest.

Therefore, I have become a huge fan of The Monkeys You Ordered (link) -- a tumblog devoted to literal New Yorker captions, which make me laugh much harder than actual New Yorker captions better than 90% of the time.

In any case, humor is often subjective, and there's no accounting for taste.

@John: I literally just LOL'ed (L'edOL?) in my chair thinking about giving that treatment to Rose Is Rose.

Re: democratic process
Agree with you @DHagar.

That is not an easy task to go over all captions multiple times to get all possible contexts. Many times just one read would trigger that connection, at least in my case. So must appreciate Mike for his effort and time to judge.

Eagerly waiting for the next one, only for much better.......

Re: democratic process
Addendum thoughts: a few months ago there was a "Every New Yorker cartoon should have this caption" meme floating around Twitter, where the caption was "Chr*st, what an *ssh*le."  That was much more annoyingly stupid because they hadn't made the Dave's Law observation that this works for everything, though I have verified that it works like a charm on The Family Circus, and also on the last panel of every Rose Is Rose.

Secondary thought: the current cartoon editor of the New Yorker now does a video blog where he writes little essays about how he doesn't get a lot of the classic NYer cartoons.  Oddly enough, the cartoons under his reign have been far inferior to what there used to be. Do you suppose there's a connection?

Re: democratic process
As a virulent defender of New Yorker cartoons, I always thought that Seinfeld's "i'm such an idiot" schtick was really tiresome; he's like Jerry Lewis without the energy or Adam Sandler without the honesty, the "I don't get it" routine always wore very thin on me, because, honestly, I get almost all of them except the occasional cultural reference I have somehow missed, and if people don't get New Yorker cartoons, they should shut up and hang their heads in shame. So the thing I like about Dave's Law is that he points out that "I'm thinking of killing myself" would actually work on everything, including the Family Circus.

I think it would also make a nice last panel of every Garfield, Peanuts, and Doonesbury.

Re: democratic process
Mike,

Interesting ... so would a "tech device" be a tool that is used for making/changing/deploying technology? But then wouldn't that make a printed book a tech device?

We have grasped a significant thread in the great sweater of meaning.

Re: democratic process
@Mike What do you think of having the previous month's winner choose the next month's contest format? You could lay out rules for a couple of contests and let the winner choose the next challenge.
