The thing that shows the most commitment
Mostly Hubbard is saying what people in similar positions at service/hardware companies are saying as the transition to SDN and VNF continues. The place where AT&T is really putting their money where their mouth is is in deciding to implement and work with VeloCloud Network's SD-WAN rather than develop their own perfectly-tailored-to-their-needs version. If there is going to be true open source SDN -- as Hubbard rightly says, that's what SDN ought to be if it's going to live up to its potential -- some of the big companies with a lot of clout will have to forego getting exactly what they want so that everyone can be part of what everyone gets. That's a very serious commitment.

Re: The thing that shows the most commitment
@JohnBarnes, that appears to be a smart strategy.  And they are making the right choice.  You can own the island or be a partner and channel to the network of islands.

I am wondering what affect the potential merger will have on their progress towards SDN Standards & Open Source.  Can they keep their eye on two balls at once?

Re: The thing that shows the most commitment
DMHagar,

I think above a certain size an organization has a lot of eyes, and can keep them on many, many balls at once. The real question is whether they eventually find out they are working on both sides of some issues at the same time.

There's been a useful phrase for this in our culture for about 50 years now ...

Virtualization
"Virtualization is a team effort -- and it takes extensive, multi-faceted collaboration." So glad to hear an executive say this. If only all companies followed this principle.

It sounds great that AT&T can run their own multiple virtual network functions across their own platform. I am sure this offers a huge cost savings.

It is great that AT&T is working with the Linux foundation. This is exciting.

SDN Standards
It has been very interesting to see AT&T move from a small landline company to a large telco company that is moving into the software industry.

AT&T loves collaboration and partnerships like working with VeloCloud.

"Standards are like opinions; everybody has one." This is a hilarious quote. AT&T has a vested interest in standards and working with excellence. They are truly embedded in the open source community.

AT&T's Hubbard Discusses SDN Standards & Open Source
I thought this article/interview was well done. It explained everything to me that I needed to know. They covered everything I wanted to know. They also discussed all the important facts about SDN standards. I really enjoyed reading this.
