Big Data alone might be enough to cause that growth
There are a very large number of big data projects that were once unthinkable and are now when-not-if; all sorts of potential ideas are coming off the shelf of possibility and onto the counter of "you can get it in a box from Amazon." Many, many of them really only needed tools like OpenStack; the concepts have been well understood for years or decades. We may be coming into one of those periods when for a short while, every bit of software in a category -- in this case, cloud computing environments that don't impose arbitrary limits on data size or volume -- is going to succeed wildly. There will probably be a shakeout later on, of course -- there usually is -- but this looks like the start of one of those big waves where for a while it will be hard to go wrong.

I hadn't thought of it before, but you're absolutely right about these services -- you really can get it in a box on amazon.

@Michelle - I can think of very few items that Amazon doesn't carry anymore. We recently just purchased our couch from Amazon and we're tossing around the idea of getting a new mattress from them as well. Amazon has really capitalized on the idea of OpenStack and they are profitting amazingly well for it.

@elizabeth Amazon is very good at innovating. I'm always curious to see what they'll do next. --- Also, you bought a couch? Wow!

True, Amazon has done well. But that doesn't mean OpenStack can't keep up. There's so much opportunity in private cloud and orchestration that I don't think competing is going to matter – there's a huge pie waiting out there.

I can only assume that pie is big enough for Open Stack now, then whoever reigns next too. We shall see!

@JohnBarnes, good point John but nothing last forever. It will be interesting to see when forever ends for the industry.

Open Stack $5B by 2020
Open Stack revenues will top $5 billion by 2020. This is a great forecast for Open Stack. It will be interesting to see if they measure up in the next few years.

It is interesting to hear that private cloud revenue will exceed public cloud by 2019. Many companies are still afraid of cloud services and many do not understand how to use them.

Re: Big Data alone might be enough to cause that growth
@JohnBarnes - I think right now Amazon is especailly at a point where they can do no wrong. I heard recently they are going to branch out into the delivery of groceries. Which they already do to some extent with PrimePantry, but I'm guessing they will start adding in more cold and frozen foods. I know in California they have produce delivery, and I am ridiculously jealous that I don't get such a feature here in Denver. If there is a snag in the use of OpenStack, it will probably be Amazon, or another heavy hitter that discovers it first.

OpenStack Will Hit $5B by 2020
When I read this article I was shocked that OpenStack will propel by 35% compound a annual growth rate. I also thought it was impressive that 451 researchers said that OpenStack revenues will top $5 billion by 2020. OpenStack is generally the large platforms for the test and development environment, web hosting, and pilot projects. This article was very important to me and I enjoyed it so much.
