But Comcast + NBC exists and there's no zero rating (that I know of?) for that mega-giant, and yet Comcast+NBC seems to find beneficial synergies. I think the diversification of adding content revenue on top of "dumb pipe" revenues might be good enough.... (for now)

Odds...

I think this is the more likely FCC action: concessions. But it's hard to put a number on the odds...

Laplacian probability in action!
Laplace pointed out that if you have a finite number of possibilities (in this case, 2, the merger works or it doesn't) and a very large degree of ignorance (for which, he also pointed out, the polite word is "uncertainty"), then the best bet you can make is that all probabilities are equal.  The tendency of the probability estimate to cling to 50% after all that study probably just indicates how little anyone knows.

But wait, there could be even more "accounting synergies!"

That is exactly what I thought when Mike first reported it.  I feel as though this is getting dangerously close to Monopoly territory.

Re: Consumers
I've been hearing the big hurdle for regulatory approval will be "zero rating." Not applying data usage caps for an AT&T/DirecTV user that streams TW content. That might a throw a rock into the synergy gears.

AT&T and Time warner half and half chance
They said that Time warner trading is about 24% lower than AT&T to do business so lets see how it turns out because I know they are taking a chance.

Consumers
One has to wonder how this deal is going to benefit consumers. When I look at this, it would seem to me the only benefit here would be AT&T and Time Warner. Such consolidation on content and services seems to me to equal a lot of pricing power.
