Re: RTL Keeps It Simple
Exactly! I think that data can give you some input, but if you really want to get in the customers brain talking to them one-on-one or in a group setting is always good!

Re: RTL simplified
freehe,

Nope, it's not about knowing what they want; it's just that what they want doesn't exist and can't exist at the present level of technology. Whether you extract from big data, design a brilliant stratified survey, or just open a phone line and take all the calls, if everyone wants a trip to the moon on gossamer wings, and nobody knows how to build a gossamer wing that can get above low earth orbit, it ain't happening.

I think this is purely a case of wait for the engineers and the financial innovators.

RTL Keeps It Simple
Companies will never truly know what their customers want if they don't ask. Data can give you some insight but the best insight comes from asking customers directly through surveys, chats, email, social media and other feedback mechanisms.

Re: RTL simplified
@JohnBarnes, eventually is correct. With all the streaming data, big data, algorithms and analytic tools they still can't figure it out. Sigh.

Re: RTL simplified
Adi, DCawrey,

Yep. We're right back to the problem that video customers really only want two things:

1) Not to have to think about anything and just have it work in general

2) Exactly what they want at any particular moment.

And the strangest thing is that the industry probably will figure out a way to give them both, eventually. Simplification this week, complexification next year, somewhere in the shuffle they'll find the balance.

Re: RTL simplified
@dcawrey - it's a tricky balance -- got to keep is simple, but also showcase/promote all the cool stuff you have, or risk it being wasted. That's why the UI is geting so much atention. I think persaonalization will help - more data, more insight allows for a better selection of content, or as the maxdome CEO put it, the "almighty algorithm. problem is I don't know if that's a 100% correct, though it does seem like Netflix is pretty close.

Re: RTL simplified
Simplicity is something that is essential to these VoD services. Cable television has had such a problem with complexity. If service providers are capable of making everything as easy as possible for the consumer, that's a key differentiator in a market that is getting full of on-demand services.
