Re: Orange debuts the NaaS
@freehe, thanks.  I think the technology capabilities will become commodities, the services and solutions that are offered will be the value-added distinguishers.

@DHagar, I agree. Companies wants services that will solve their problems and help them to remain competitive, they are not concerned about technology and how it gets done.

@Mike Robuck, good point Mike. Some companies embrace change, some companies lead change, and some companies stand by and watch change happen. Those that embrace change and lead change are the companies that remain competitive.

Re: Orange debuts the NaaS
Mike,

You may have just answered your own question about how non-VNF providers can compete: by offering a fully owned stack of always on boxes. At least in the entertainment world, there's a significant resistance to the "lease" or "subscription" model, especially after the various debacles of big companies yanking contact back, and a whole lively subindustry of software designed to download a copy (whether you're supposed to be able to do that or not) and put it out of reach of the subscription service.

"So that the giants can't shut you off on a whim" is not a bad sales slogan.

@MIke I see. It also makes sense to package things to prove end-to-end coverage from one company. Some businesses really do prefer that, feeling that everything integrates well and that they only have to deal with one vendor when they have an issue. As one person I interviewed put it, there only "one throat to choke."

He was bringing up the monetization side of VNF-based services. Having services on demand is a big change from having stacked boxes that provide "always on" services.

< how we get that VNF registered, how do we pay for them on demand and have financial modeling work in such a way that this really works with our vision of on demand networking?"> Indeed, @Mike, those are key questions.

Is this part of the answer to that? ""By offering a VNF as part of a network, it allows the customer to buy a service that's owned and operated by the same entity end-to-end," Isch said.

Re: Orange debuts the NaaS
This sort of news makes me wonder about the service providers that aren't emabracing SDN/NFV. I know they are in the minority, but how do they expect to compete?

I didn't include this in the story, but Isch said Orange also had to figure out how to make money with VNFs.

"How can we make the financial aspect of a VNF work between us, the provider, and the VNF providers themselves? If we go back to the idea of on demand services, as a service provider I want to pay for the service when my customer uses it. I don't want to pay to have a VNF sitting on the shelf. I want registration and deregistration happening between myself, the customer, and the VNF provider. I think that's been one of the challenges we've had to work through: how we get that VNF registered, how do we pay for them on demand and have financial modeling work in such a way that this really works with our vision of on demand networking?"

Re: Orange debuts the NaaS
How far we have come. It used to take a lot of work to get new business services up and running. It's great to see these changes come to enterprise provisioning – and it's something customers obviously want.
