Re: Culture Reason
I think it is fair for people to be a bit wary of subscriptions. Interesting to hear this is what might stop certain cultures from buying a subscription. Many of these services are actually pretty low cost compared to cable. But in some places, like in Europe, these services are offered over the air.

What is the user interface they're using? It seemed like for a while there service providers thought cloud-based UIs would be the big difference makers for their services, along with better content searches.

Re: Are you in the content business or aren't you?
@Adi: Definitely. That said, if you decide you want to get into/start a new business, hey, go for it.  But understand that that's what you're doing -- which I think some of these big boys here are missing.

That said, Comcast is uniquely placed since they're lumped in with NBC now.  Ditto for AT&T if the Time Warner deal goes through (Warner Bros., et al.).

Re: Culture Reason
@ms.a: Yeah, but everybody and their cousin is providing content for free these days.  What's the differentiator?  What's the USP?  Originality of content probably isn't going to be enough either (unless you hit a MAJOR homerun...which is extremely difficult to do unless you're Netflix and you're throwing HUNDREDS of millions of dollars at original content all the time).  You have to have, as they say, a gimmick.

Re: Are you in the content business or aren't you?
@joe - agreed, that's an important point. The often mentioned "convergence" of media and telecoms is a reality in many ways, but you have be clear about what your core business is. Reaching too far can get painful pretty quickly, as content development, specially for video, is a high stakes game.

Are you in the content business or aren't you?
Compelling insights.  I think fundamentally that it comes down to whether you're fundamentally in the content business to begin with -- even if only a little bit.

Netflix is, undoubtedly (along with Hulu, Dailymotion, and Youtube, et al.).  Amazon sort of is (they sell a lot of DVDs anyway).  Saying that telcos and broadband carriers are in the content business, however, is akin to saying that the USPS, UPS, and DHL are in the content business (because they deliver DVDs from Amazon).  It's a stretch that's a little too far removed.

Maxdome
But on maxdome we keep titles on for longer, so there is more predictability, consumers know that it will be there. This also fits in well with modern viewing habits and trends such as binge watching. And of course we also offer a range of films and series that are not available on mediathek services at all.

All these factors look like good buying factors for Maxdome.

Culture Reason
I think it is, but I think it is also cultural to some extent. In Germany, we are a little suspicious of signing up for subscriptions. We want to avoid the "subscription trap." But yes, we also have a very strong free TV service, including catch-up services for shows that have been missed.

We are aware of the culture factor and also the free TV service. It is intresting to know that even the catch up services comes for free. This may certainly pose challenges for subscription based services.
