I wonder if this works as an adaption of IMAX filming. While some screens that claim to show IMAX films are merely larger than standard, some are set in a dome that really does surround you with the images.

Re: 360
I remember a long time ago, Disneyworld had 360 movies in fairly large domed tents.. and I couldn't stand watching them because I'd get nauseated from the constant motion in my peripheral vision. I'm pretty sure I'm not the target market for 360 video, but I wonder what the audience will really value from a 360 video experience. It seems like the hype after Avatar in 3D.. it'll be a bit exciting for a while, but it might not catch on unless there's some really good content to sustain the tech beyond the novelty factor.

BBC 360 video
BBC is a popular channel on cable and I like some of the shows they have on and them having the 360 video just add more for what they have to offer.

Re: 360
@mhhf1ve that's my take on 3D, too. I'm just surprised it's still going on with so many scenes so clearly thrown in specifically to show off the 3D effects. As for the 360, I suppose it can have a dizzying effect. I recall in planetarium shows that use domed screens with 360 views ther was sometimes a warning that you could feel that way with the advice to close your eyes for a while if it does happen. I don't experience adverse effects myself, but I suppose it can be slightly annoying to try to see all around all the time and wonder if you'll miss something to your back when you're watching what's in front. But on a TV screen taht should work differently.

360 Video as a game?
I suppose if 360 video content could be made into a semi-interactive game.. like a choose-your-own-adventure book of sorts, then it could extend its novelty. I could see someone adapting Realm Pictures' "real life" first person shooter to 360 video...?

Re: 360
The dizzying effect (from my experience) isn't limited to VR goggles or wrap-around screens.. I can barely stand playing Halo on a TV screen because I'm not too good with the controls, so if I spin Master Chief around too much -- that's it for me, I'm dizzy.

I can't even watch some movies that try to make the "action" look more realistic by having the cameraman "run" with the camera instead of using a smooth rig. The "jumpy" home video technique makes me want to vomit after just a few minutes.

BBC has truly been in the forefront of programming for years and if anyone is going to legitimize 360 degree its the BBC.

Re: 360
I have tried some VR content, and I think people are going to want only bite sized amounts in the beginning. Will they want more over time? It's entirely possible, but it is a bit overwhelming to be in virtual reality for a long time. Maybe we'll all get used to it though...

Re: 360 Video as a game?
I think mhhf1ve has hit very close to the core issue here. The whole purpose of screened/broadcast "experience" is that someone structures it for us -- or at least as i said elsewhere that's the last 400 years or so of visual performance history. It's not at all clear to me that the present generation will want to suddenly plunge back into uncontrolled full vision in all directions; reading the viewpoint is part of how we know what the message says.

On the other hand, the first generation to have telephones had to be taught, as an interim method, to talk to the microphone as if it were a person, i.e. hold the receiver to your ear, point your face at the funnel, and pretend the funnel is the person you are talking to. Within a generation or two everyone managed to get the hang of talking "through" the phone.

What is the VR equivalent of "talking through the phone", I wonder? How long before we figure it out?  (Not long, I bet -- we're an adaptable buncha monkeys).

Re: 360
You are not alone @mhhf1ve in your assessment of the "true realities"--the newer generations, though, seem to embrace it--and this is where I think this is being geared.   The question is one of sustainability more than anything else.
